TUMI Update July

TUMI Update July

Dear Friends of TUMI ,

Recently, we have been buzzing with activities and events. Let's dive into what we've been up to and what's on the horizon in July.

One of the standout moments this past month was our participation in the ICLEI World Congress 2024 in São Paulo, Brazil. Visionaries, policymakers, and urban mobility enthusiasts from around the world shared insights, strategies, and experiences, all aimed at making urban mobility more sustainable and inclusive. Our TUMI #EBusMission hosted a side event to explore how the ambitious national fleet renewal program, with financing plans for over 2,000 e-buses, and initiatives like Reciclo can pave the way for a climate-friendly and just mobility transition.

Additionally, TUMI co-hosted the Regional Exchange on Electrifying Minibus Operations in East Africa, held in Kigali. This event brought together delegates from multiple African countries to brainstorm and strategize on the future of minibus electrification. TUMI led a compelling session on "Ensuring Battery Circularity in E-Minibus Operations," exploring innovative pathways for effective end-of-life battery management.

We are thrilled to announce a new partnership call to enhance the operational efficiency of electrified public transport. We are also excited to inform you that our two-part e-learning course, "Transforming Urban Mobility," are now available anytime on the Future Learn platform.

Our dedicated TUMI Partners continuously seek ways to foster collaboration and exchange, working toward making transportation more inclusive and climate-friendly. See below for all their latest news!

Have a great read!

To promote the Building Feminist Cities event that will be realized in August 13 in Brasília, a panel session moderated by ITDP Brasil was realized at Parque da Mobilidad Urbana in Sao Paulo, Brazil on June 13.

Once again it became clear, that not only for Brazil, the intersectionality is very important to consider. According to a study from ITDP Brasil, in the Metropolitan Region of São Paulo, 52% of the population is made up of women, 43% of whom are black. However, only 10% of the poorest live close to medium and high capacity public transport stations.

TUMI Lab Kenya: Nakuru County leads the way in safe, inclusive public transport with new Code of Conduct

© Flone Initiative

The Flone Initiative Trust with support from TUMI Lab is working with the Nakuru County Government in Kenya to develop a Public Transport Code of Conduct to address mobility challenges with a focus on vulnerable public transport workers and users, especially women, persons with disabilities, and older persons.

The Code of Conduct housed in Department of Road, Public Works and Transport will strengthen the county government’s capacity to enforce and implement sustainable interventions addressing existing and emerging trends that negatively affect gender equity and inclusion in public transport. The code will further increase awareness and increase stakeholders' capacity for collective action towards the realization of a safe inclusive public transport ecosystem for all.

This is transformative as it's the first Public Transport Code of Conduct in the country and will set a precedent for other municipal and city boards to transform how their public transport works in cities and towns. More news and a blog post on the TUMI Lab in Nakuru will be issued in the next update.

Stay Tuned!
