Tech careers: Reimagining your future within health care

Massive shifts in the technology workforce have not just disrupted the field; they've created a sea of opportunity for technologists seeking new roles. One source calculates that more than 150,000 tech employees have been affected by layoffs this year alone.

Uncertainty of this magnitude is often uncomfortable, yet throughout my life and career, uncertainty has acted as a catalyst for growth and transformation, pushing me into new chapters of learning. The current moment offers technologists an elusive gift – time to thoughtfully redirect their paths forward.

To those contemplating change now:

• Know that your specialized skills have never been in higher demand; technology is driving change and innovation in almost every sector, and certainly within my own field of health care.
• Align your work to your values. Do you prioritize meaningful work over employee stock? Work-life balance over a shiny workplace culture? What motivates you?
• Assess your openness to change. Perhaps this is a time to expand your role or explore a new sector. Take time to sync with your future self rather than the one who has built your career until now. What excites you the most?
• Define a life that you’ll love by identifying your priorities. Do you wish to work within one time zone, work remotely, or have protected time away? Does a mission-based organization align with your passions?

These are just a few of the questions I ask myself during times of change.
