“Becoming oneself shouldn’t equal homelessness and poverty”
Washington DC: Transgender people's lives and rights in the United States have most recently gained more attention due to the systemic inequities that lead to rejection and violence. At the center of all this are the lives of transgender youth, who learn to pave their own way. CHOSEN FAMILY, a new film by director Sulay Gonzalez to be premiered in Fall 2016, focuses on young transgender individuals and their mentors. Filmed in Washington DC, Chosen Family features the struggles and successes of marginalized transgender youth and their mentors.
The movie reveals:
- What it means to be a young transgender individual rejected by your own blood.
- The lasting impact of this traumatic rejection and the frequently resulting transition to homelessness and poverty.
- The mentor’s determination to lead transgender youth on the right path.
- The challenges mentors and mentees in providing the basic necessities of life, pursuing education, dealing with physical changes, finding jobs, looking for love, and simply surviving.
- What it means to create, develop, and nurture a “Chosen Family.”
