Post Merger Integration – a closed book!?

Demystifying the world of PMI. – Seal no. 4

🔒 Seal #4 – Fear of breaking things.

The following seals around the book of Post Merger Integration represent the best-of from my collection of reasons not to do a reasonable Post Merger Integration I heard. Here it comes:

“Changing means breaking.”

The usual circumstance of an acquisition is not an emergency! Although there are rare situations which are absolutely critical. Right now, we are talking about the standard setting, 98% of all acquisitions.

Post Merger Integration is bringing people together. Organizing collaboration between two organizations that might have been competitors in the past. Secondly, Post Merger Integration is a journey rather than a single maneuver.

Post Merger Integration is a gradual change. It is rather an evolution than a big bang. Step by step, two organizations are evolving into a single – and yes also a new – organization. The Post Merger Integration journey does not involve a U-turn.

The key is you have to lead this evolution. By having the acquisition strategy clearly defined and transparent for everybody. This is also known as the WHY. Why are we starting this journey and bringing two organizations together. Secondly – and here is the real leadership challenge – you have to set the scene, pave the way for the teams, communicating, supporting, serving, making it happen. Leadership is key, as in any change process or transformation.

The chance of an inevitable catastrophe is rather low.
