Ryan's Marketing Roundup- June

June ended with me going the New Media Breakfast on Google Analytics. This was the first time I’d attended one of these breakfasts and it won’t be the last. It was a really informative interesting session and I’ve already blocked out my diary for their next one on Email Marketing!

June was a strange one, digital marketing had never been so crucial in the election and the prime minister even enlightened us with her naughty antics as a child. This was captured on a flag at Glastonbury so although maybe not the best answer certainly captured the imaginations of many. As well as this- a Christmas song was used on a TV advert… in June?!

Above I touched on the election and it was interesting from an online marketing point of view for a couple of reasons, Labour invested in their strategy of capturing young voters and targeted them through online platforms. “We Are Social” noted that in the 6 week period from the announcement of the election Labour online presence grew 61%. A 61% growth in the use of  Facebook, (the most used platform during the election) Instagram, Twitter etc. Conservatives had grown only 6% over the same period- you would have thought this would have been more considering they ploughed so much money into Facebook. During the election sponsored ads would have popped up on your social media feed, you couldn’t get away from it! Jeremy Corbyn was the only leader on Snapchat and that combined with his appearances with influential celebrities like Stormzy and JMB helped him win people over as his resonation with a younger audience shone through. With this focus on capturing the attention of young, tech savvy voters no wonder there was a reported surge on 18-24 year olds. There is such a power and influence behind using these tools, and utilising them in the correct way can provide such value in the message you get out there, whether this is during an election or in the running of a business- nail the online.

I had the TV on in the background and to my disbelief ‘Wish It Could Be Christmas’ was playing at this time of the year. Boots created this advert with this popular Christmas song and it definitely made me sit up and watch it. It shows people getting ready for summer, using the products and rushing to enjoy the weather. The Christmas track plays over the top of this and personally I like it. If you take the music away from the advert it becomes a generic summer feel good advert that you don’t really pay an awful lot of attention to but the inclusion of the song puts a unique spin on it. At the end of the day I know I’ll remember this advert for that reason and that’s what you’re generally looking for. An advert that gets people talking, shows off the products and offers that something a little bit different.

That was my quick roundup of June. I guess it could be best summed up as surprising. A shock election result, an out of season TV track and I’m starting to get my head around the enigma that is Google Analytics. Some of the same in July please!
