Regularly re-evaluate your priorities

Regularly re-evaluate your priorities

This article debuted in December, in time for New Years Resolutions. But a key message was that you can re-evaluate your priorities any time of year and/or multiple times of year. For those of us in academia, you may be tempted to set goals in May, for the upcoming year. Well, it's about that time.

I argued in the original post that December is ideal for students to take a look at their schedules, their lives, and their happiness. Why? You still have a semester in school to network, seek out internships, and talk with your advisor about your goals.

But it's no longer December. It's almost May. So what should you do now?

Depending on your summer plans, this answer will vary. For me, I'm managing my own time over the next few months, pushing through research projects, and prepping for the upcoming year. If you're starting an internship or continuing a job, you should still carve out some time for reflection, but your overall goals may be less intensive.

To give you a sneak peek, my suggested approach starts with 3 questions.

Ask yourself:

  1. Where were you this time last year?
  2. Where did you think you would be now?
  3. Where are you now?

Managing expectations is key to happiness, and feeling successful in your endeavors.
