Reflect, Honor, and Aspire in Black History Month and Beyond

In Black History Month, we celebrate the remarkable achievements and contributions of Black individuals across science, tech, business, arts, politics, academia, and more. Each year, I learn new stories that highlight the strength and determination of Black people in the face of adversity and systemic oppression.

Many Black women throughout history represent a legacy of unparalleled achievement. These women, along with many others, blazed a trail for future generations by accomplishing monumental milestones. This month in particular, I honor their contributions by reflecting on just some of the many triumphant and influential Black women in recent history, including Ethel Payne, Oprah Winfrey, and Toni Morrison.

Mae Jemison—a physician, engineer, educator, entrepreneur, and the first woman of color to go into space—especially inspires me. Her energizing and fortifying advice, "Never be limited by other people's limited imaginations. If you adopt their attitudes, then the possibility won't exist because you'll have already shut it out. You can hear other people's wisdom, but you've got to re-evaluate the world for yourself."

Who’s inspiring you? Please share. I’d love to hear.

Knowing and drawing on our forerunners’ strength encourages me to overcome daily challenges and persevere in my journey. Discovering new insights from Black women’s trailblazing accomplishments fuels my sense of ambition and possibility. Honoring the legacy of resilience, innovation, and fortitude in Black history inspires me to strive for excellence.

These legacies also prompt me to consider what more I aspire to. How can I foster an even greater sense of inclusion for Black professionals? What opportunities will I provide for networking, collaboration, and solidarity? Where can I focus in the community to serve as an example of what could be? Who else will I empower with the conviction and confidence that they can achieve their dreams?

Throughout 2024, as we reflect on the past, illuminate the present, and envision future possibilities for Black professionals, never dim your light. Remember that you are abundantly worthy of success as we continue to forge greater opportunities for one another and for our communities.
