A Recap of the 2024 BTC Prague Conference

BTC Prague is one of THE gathering places for die-hard Bitcoiners, which can be intimidating for a relative newcomer like me. Here are some of the highlights from Europe’s most significant Bitcoin event.

Underwhelming Welcome

Erik Cason opened by emphasising Prague's importance in the Bitcoin world, noting the creation of the first Bitcoin hardware wallet here. Quoting anarchist Emma Goldman, he underscored the passion behind the Bitcoin movement and tried to energise the crowd. The vast venue was closed off to the public for day 1, so it was less of a crowd and more of a small gathering.

Bitcoin’s Role in Addressing Economic Issues

Cason used the formula "Problem + Passion + Purpose = Profit" to stress Bitcoin's potential to address issues created by fiat currency. He argued that Bitcoin should be enjoyable, revolutionary, and profitable.

Building Bitcoin Businesses

A panel discussed challenges in Bitcoin business development, like limited marketing opportunities and regulatory hurdles. However, Bitcoin shows promise across various sectors, and early adopters are loyal and valuable customers.

Perspectives on Fiat Currency

Several sessions criticised fiat currency, highlighting its flaws and the majority's uncritical acceptance of it. Speakers pointed out the artificial nature of inflation targets and the historical manipulation of fiat money.

Changing the World in Unpredictable Ways

Riccardo Giorgio Frega argued that Bitcoin is a transformative protocol with global significance, used increasingly in regions with high inflation, like Turkey and South America. He called Bitcoin a "lifeboat for billions."

21 Rules of Bitcoin by Michael Saylor

Michael Saylor presented his 21 rules of Bitcoin, emphasising its transformative impact on economics and property. He argued Bitcoin is the only genuinely ownable asset and urged people to support Bitcoin without rejecting fiat entirely.

The Case for Self Custody

Trezor CEO Matěj Žák highlighted the importance of self-custody, noting the significant amount of Bitcoin lost to hacks and scams. He advised using open-source air-gapped hardware and dispersing vital information to protect wealth.

Bitcoin as a Tool of Freedom

Stella Assange emphasised Bitcoin's role in sustaining WikiLeaks and its importance for economic freedom in countries with restricted banking systems. Assange argued that Bitcoin supports free speech, property rights, and access to capital markets.

Censorship Resistance

A panel discussed privacy and censorship, highlighting Nostr, a protocol for decentralised social media. While promising, its complexity makes it currently unsuitable for non-technical users.
