Racing to Lead

Hey Wrench Turners and Sweaty Leaders!

...oh wait, I haven't shared anything about the new program 😅. Click the link to find out more, but that's not what this newsletter is about today.

The Sweaty Leader - A Program designed to turn Mechanics into Leaders

We’re back with another exciting edition of our newsletter, packed with insights and stories from the automotive world. In February, we had the pleasure of featuring Christopher Johnson on the podcast.

Christopher Johnson on Wrench Turners Podcast - Available on YouTube and Spotify

Christopher's journey through the automotive industry is nothing short of inspiring. Let's dive into the highlights and key takeaways from our conversation with him.

From Broken Leg to Racing Dreams

Christopher's entry into the automotive world began quite uniquely. As a high school student with a broken leg, he stumbled upon a Champ Car race on TV. This moment ignited his passion for racing, leading him to explore various facets of the industry, from timing and scoring at American Le Mans series races to ice racing and autocross.

Hands-On Experience in High School

Christopher’s hands-on journey began in high school, where he helped a local shop owner set up and run his business. This real-world experience, ranging from installing hoists to performing brake jobs, laid a solid foundation for his career.

Race Shop Adventures

Working in a race shop for seven years provided Christopher with invaluable experience. From wiring C5 Corvettes to learning the intricacies of race car mechanics, he developed a deep understanding of the technical and practical aspects of the trade. His love for wiring and diagnostics flourished during this time.

Transition to Auto Dealerships

After his stint at the race shop, Christopher transitioned to working at various auto dealerships. His roles ranged from performing routine maintenance to tackling complex mechanical issues. His adaptability and learning eagerness allowed him to thrive in different environments, including Honda, Kia, and Mazda dealerships.

Key Advice for Aspiring Mechanics

One of the standout pieces of advice Christopher shared:

Focus on doing the job you’re getting paid for, rather than how much you’re getting paid for the job.

This mindset not only builds respect and trust in the workplace but also fosters a strong work ethic and continuous learning.

We're really grateful that Christopher took the time to be on the show and hope that all of you will listen to get all of the granular bits found within.
