The Pros and Cons of joining a Podcast Network: Insights at Podcast Movement in Denver

In a recent episode of Business of Sound, "The Honest Pros/Cons of Going from an Independent Podcaster to a Media Co/Network," a panel discussion from Podcast Movement in Denver was featured front and center.

Hosted by our CEO, David Segura , our panelists included podcasters @Lindsay McMahon of All Ears English, Shannah Game CFP® of Everyone’s Talkin’ Money, Kevin Miller of Self Helpful, and Hala Taha of YAP Media. During the panel discussion, we explored the power of cross-promotion, guest swaps, and feed drops for exponential growth. We uncovered various monetizing ways, from securing a book deal to partnerships with big-name brand advertisers. Long story short, this panel covered a lot of ground!

Here are three key takeaways from the conversation:

  1. The power of collaboration: Cross-promotion on other shows and guest swaps can significantly grow a podcast’s audience. Networking within the podcasting community is an invaluable means of exposing your content to fresh audiences and potential listeners.
  2. The Independent vs. Network Dilemma: Deciding between staying independent or joining a network is not easy. While independence can guarantee complete creative freedom, joining a network drives economies of scale and helps podcasters leverage a larger media company’s expertise and relationships. Ultimately, it's important to prioritize sustainable brand growth and find a partner who is invested in your podcast's success. Media companies can help facilitate enhanced monetization, promo swaps, feed drops, and even the chance to be featured in the press. Finding a partner that aligns with your show's direction and goals is essential.
  3. Monetization: Building a loyal following is crucial for attracting advertisers, but it can be challenging for independent creators to secure big partnerships. Advertisers often prefer working with partners that offer vast scale and reach. Provided that a media partner can help you generate more money than you would otherwise make going solo - it feels like a “no-brainer” to move forward.

Looked like a great lineup of panelists, David. So sad I missed this in 2023 yet on the bright side I was able to meet you in person this year in LA. :-)
