Prioritizing Mental Health in the Workplace: Strategies for Employee Wellbeing

Mental health is a critical aspect of overall well-being, and it is essential to maintain a positive mental state in the workplace. Many factors contribute to workplace stress, such as workload, deadlines, interpersonal relationships, and conflict resolution. However, employers can help their employees by providing access to Employee Assistance Programs (EAPs), encouraging open communication, and fostering healthy work relationships.

In this post, we will explore ways in which employees can preserve their well-being, including accessing EAP services, practicing time blocking to support "deep work," connecting with people leaders, developing healthy relationships or mentors within the workplace, and advocating for what they need.

Accessing EAP Services

Employee Assistance Programs (EAPs) are employer-sponsored services that offer mental health support to employees. EAPs provide confidential, short-term counseling, assessment, and referral services for a range of mental health issues. They are typically available at no cost to employees and their family members.

EAPs can be an essential resource for employees who are struggling with workplace stress or personal issues that are impacting their work. By providing access to confidential counseling, employees can get the help they need to cope with their challenges.

Practicing Time Blocking for Deep Work

One way to support mental health in the workplace is to practice time blocking. Time blocking is a time management technique that involves scheduling specific blocks of time for specific tasks. By dedicating time to focused work, employees can increase productivity and reduce stress.

In his book "Deep Work," Cal Newport argues that deep work, or focused, uninterrupted work, is crucial for productivity and mental health. Time blocking can help employees create space for deep work and reduce distractions. By minimizing interruptions and distractions, employees can stay focused on the task at hand, leading to a more satisfying and productive work experience.

Connecting 1:1 with People Leaders

Developing healthy relationships with people leaders can also support mental health in the workplace. By connecting with leaders on a one-on-one basis, employees can discuss workplace concerns and receive guidance on how to navigate difficult situations.

One-on-one meetings can also allow employees to express their needs and concerns. Leaders can offer support, resources, and feedback to help employees feel valued and engaged.

Developing Healthy Relationships or Mentors Within the Workplace

In addition to connecting with people leaders, employees can also benefit from developing healthy relationships or mentors within the workplace. By cultivating positive relationships with colleagues, employees can build a support network that can help them navigate workplace stressors.

Mentors can provide guidance and feedback on career development, and colleagues can offer emotional support and a sounding board for workplace concerns. By developing strong relationships with colleagues and mentors, employees can feel more connected to their work and more resilient to stress.

Advocating for What You Need

Finally, employees can advocate for what they need to support their mental health in the workplace. This can include requesting flexible work arrangements, such as telecommuting or flexible hours, or asking for supportive equipment, such as ergonomic furniture or noise-canceling headphones.

Employees can also reach out to their employee relations partners for support and guidance on navigating workplace challenges. By advocating for their needs, employees can take ownership of their mental health and create a more supportive work environment.
