Predicting the future of intelligent medicine in 2023

The second most widespread thing to do at the beginning of the year after making New Year resolutions is to forecast technology development and new trends. AI, web3, metaverse, and so on are among the most "traceable" and "predictable" things to discuss in all reports of this kind. On the other hand, the most traditional fields like medicine are usually under the forecasting horizon - despite some big research findings the practical reality of the doctor's room reminded almost the same for the last 50 years. Until a couple of years ago "advanced medicine" and "AI" became almost a buzzword not only in investors' pitch decks but on the pages of famous publications.

In the last couple of weeks, major publicity players have released their predictions about the possible future of AI and innovation in medicine. Among the main topics and trends are:

  1. Single-solution products aimed at one specific disease will fall. If you want to survive and win in the market - you have to create a solution aimed to cover all (or at least as much as possible) patient needs/conditions at one tool.
  2. Everyone understands that a good TAM prediction in the pitch deck is a loser. The real patient value measured in the real world is a king.
  3. Creating a killing tool for everyone is not a strategy anymore. Even for big companies. Biases in AI prediction are a big thing, so the only good strategy is to segment your solution to one specific group of patients with very specific needs.
  4. Tech companies will further acquire the part of healthcare services. While big med players are still not sure about the cost of innovation, Amazon has shown the way how tech giants can win the race by the acquisition of healthcare providers and enhancing it with its own strategy in innovation and AI.
  5. M&A and joint developments will continue to grow. Just look at the picture below to understand how active were the biggest players in 2022 in organizing the tight net of RnD connections. (credits to the Medical Futurist for the pic)

6. "Disruptive" word will be used but seldom. Everyone is understanding now that the medical industry doesn't want disruption but needs "advancement" and "support".

7. Remote services continue to grow. Thanks to COVID everyone has tested the great pleasure of visiting a doctor and getting recommendations for their health just sitting on a sofa. Getting back to the small waiting room and answering uncomfortable questions F2F is not an option anymore. So, the digitalization of the first line of medicine will continue to grow this year.
