Outstanding Experience vs Aligned Culture and Values...And the Winner Is?

Outstanding Experience vs Aligned Culture and Values...And the Winner Is?

Hey hiring managers,

What’s your no.1 requirement for a candidate? If your answer is ‘someone with the right experience’, stop right there. That’s where you’re going wrong.

Your no.1 ask when hiring shouldn't be ‘get me someone with the right experience', it should be 'get me someone with the same values who will be an asset to our company culture'.

Okay, okay. Yes, some experience is required – you wouldn’t hire a junior manager-level candidate to fill a director-level role (are you mad?!), but the experience isn’t the be-all or end-all. You’re missing out on the best talent if that’s your approach.

At The Sterling Choice, we get under the skin of a hiring company – warts and all. We’ll understand your values, your mission, and your challenges intricately, so we can match you with a candidate that also shares these important factors. It’s called value-based hiring.

This approach increases retention so you have to hire less often and can develop skilled dedicated staff that are aligned to your business goals. It’s also great for your existing teams.

Take football managers, or soccer managers for our US readers. Huge turnover, and retention for more than a few years is as rare as rocking horse s**t.

Most recently in the Premier League, Chelsea manager Pochettino left after just one season in charge, by ’mutual consent’.

Why? Many experts attribute it to a clash of visions, misalignment of values, and contrasting approaches to success.  Chelsea is now looking for a fourth manager in just two years as the club struggles to find someone that can thrive in the culture it has created.

If managers like Pochettino (and he’s far from the only one), with multi-million-pound salaries will walk for these reasons, you can bet your staff will too, eventually.

Cheers,

Lukas.
