Will the next President of the United States stall healthcare innovation?

The speaker list for the upcoming Digital Healthcare Innovation Summit (DHIS) is a veritable who’s who of the industry. Luminaries, like the head of Partners In Health and the CEO of GE Healthcare IT, will sit for fireside chats with top health tech investors. Big medical providers like Dignity Health and Intermountain Healthcare will speak on panels alongside entrepreneurs of rising companies like Bright Health and Docent Health.

But the biggest stars of the show will undoubtedly be the two of the architects of the Affordable Care Act -- economist Jonathan Gruber and healthcare expert David Blumenthal. “A week away from election for the President of United States, it will be great to start with, ‘Where are we in terms of the promise of the Affordable Care Act, and where is it going?’” DHIS co-chair and health tech investor Bill Geary said.

It’s been an explosive time in the industry since the ACA was passed, and major changes are underway with artificial intelligence, prescriptive analytics and the general consumerization of healthcare tech. The next president will determine whether innovation continues.

“The pause button could be hit while people try to figure out where dust settles under a Trump administration,” Geary said. “Should Hillary prevail I think we’ll keep marching forward at an even more accelerated pace.”

Is the assumption that pouring tax dollars into inefficient big iron EMR systems was innovation. I hope the next president stops that.

The real question is "Will the next President of the United States allocate health information funding to projects with meaningful Return on Investment?"

It will be fascinating to see who wins and shapes digital health innovation as a result of public policies, Steve.
