Moving Forward: Exploring New Dimensions in Leadership and Job Satisfaction (#22)

Dear Friend,

Nonprofit work presents unique challenges and unparalleled opportunities for deep engagement and substantial personal growth. This twenty-second edition highlights human resources professionals with trauma-infused human resources skills and the skills a human resources practitioner brings to the table who has experienced trauma.

In next week's twenty-third edition, we will look at finance professionals and trauma. We would like to remind you of our last twenty-first edition, which was about taking care of yourself by taking time off.

Trauma-Informed Human Resources (HR)

Trauma-informed HR involves creating policies, procedures, and a work environment that acknowledges and addresses the impact of trauma on employees, promoting safety, trustworthiness, transparency, peer support, collaboration, empowerment, and cultural sensitivity. HR professionals trained in this approach are equipped to recognize signs of trauma and understand its effects on behavior and performance. This allows them to handle sensitive situations with empathy and provide appropriate support. This includes implementing compassionate policies such as flexible work arrangements, mental health days, access to counseling services, and transparent grievance processes to support employees who have experienced trauma. Additionally, trauma-informed HR focuses on fostering a workplace culture that prevents retraumatization and promotes overall employee well-being through trauma awareness training and creating an inclusive environment.

HR Professionals' Personal Experience with Trauma

HR professionals who have experienced trauma bring a deep personal understanding and empathy to their roles. This personal experience can inform their interactions with others, but it is essential to recognize that this perspective is more about individual experience than systemic practice. Such professionals must establish boundaries and engage in self-care to avoid burnout and effectively support others. This might include seeking personal therapy or support to manage their trauma. While they naturally exhibit high levels of empathy and sensitivity, their ability to handle trauma-related issues can vary based on their own mental health and coping mechanisms. There is a risk that personal trauma could lead to biases or emotional responses that might not align with best practices. Thus, while an HR professional dealing with trauma brings valuable personal perspectives and individual coping strategies to their work, trauma-informed HR is a structured, organization-wide approach designed to support all employees through policies, training, and a culture that acknowledges and addresses trauma compassionately and comprehensively.

Katharine Manning ’s, “We Need Trauma-Informed Workspaces,” Harvard Business Review

She shares, “How do we ensure that our organizations have the skills and resources to navigate trauma effectively? The CENTERS FOR DISEASE CONTROL AND PREVENTION, US PUBLIC HEALTH SERVICE identifies six guiding principles for a trauma-informed approach: 1) safety; 2) trustworthiness and transparency; 3) peer support; 4) collaboration and mutuality; 5) empowerment, voice, and choice; and 6) cultural, historical, and gender issues. I would simplify these to three overarching concepts:

  • Acknowledgment (“I will be heard”)
  • Support (“I can get the help I need”)
  • Trust (“I will be treated fairly”)”

This isn't everything, but it's a great start.

Please Seek Help
