Move More, Celebrate Diversity, and Take a Siesta...

Pop culture went hard this week. Beyoncé stepped into her cowboy boots with the release of 'Cowboy Carter'—which the queen of country herself, Dolly Parton, contributed to. Also importantly, McDonald's announced that all locations will serve Krispy Kreme donuts by the end of 2026. This is good news for both Beyoncé fans and donut lovers alike. 🍩

But don’t you worry… HR news is almost just as exciting. We’ve got the latest on how Gen Z managers are shaking up the corporate work structure, ideas for “Move More Month!” and "Celebrate Diversity Month" this April and some hot takes on unlimited PTO.

Thanks for reading. We 🫶 our HR Heroes Hub community.

What's “Slump Hour?”

A recent survey from WorkLife of 10,000 employees found that 45% of workers tasked with an eight-hour day actually work only about half of that. Fortune recently took a look into how Gen Z managers are handling this... and found that they are introducing practices like “slump hours” and siestas at their companies. These breaks are meant to improve productivity and work-life balance.

It's no surprise that the gap between Gen Z and previous generations is the widest we've ever seen. Rather than totally discounting their desires for a less traditional workday, it might be beneficial to listen, research and find an appropriate balance at your organization.

Get out of that swivel chair and bust a move!

April is “Move More Month" which means it is an excellent time to shine a light on moving more! Some ideas for you to try with your team:

  • A daily stretch reminder. 🤸
  • Hold one-on-ones while on a walk. 🚶
  • Invite employees to share photos of getting their movement in! 📷
  • Offer a free yoga class for employees to attend. 🧘
  • Hold a competition to see who can get the most steps in April! 👟

Are ERGs a good idea?

According to the Pew Research Center, over half of workers think it’s good for companies to focus on increasing diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI), but only a quarter say their workplace has affinity or employee resource groups (ERGs).

April is also "Celebrate Diversity Month," which might be a good time to take a look at your DEI efforts. Here's a great article on how employee resource groups can strengthen inclusion in the workplace. 👍

Is unlimited PTO all that it’s cracked up to be?

Well 56% of our poll voters think so… but the comments told a different story. Employees feel like unlimited PTO makes it hard to know what’s acceptable or where the line is. It can even create guilt or stress around taking time off. An alternative approach might be to encourage minimum PTO taken by each employee, or provide a benefit that helps employees take a vacation. What have you seen work well for your organization?

Bambooligans in the Wild: Peru!

Have you dreamed of hiking to Machu Picchu? Well, live vicariously through our Bambooligans Coulton Willes and Caitlin Willes who made the trek this month. Get their tips below! ⛰️

  1. The one thing you cannot miss: Definitely the trail to Machu Picchu and Machu Picchu in general. That whole experience was just such an adventure.
  2. Best thing you ate? Lomo Saltado! It's a traditional Peruvian dish with meat, rice, veggies...and fries!
  3. Know before you go... If you plan on trekking to Machu Picchu, make sure you give yourself a few days before the hike to acclimatize (most of us live at a significantly lower altitude than most areas in the Peruvian highlands). Cusco is a good place to stay. We stayed there for 2 days before our trek and that did the trick for us.

👋 See you next month!

Hi there, I just finished a huge study on remote work where I analyzed 1M remote job openings in the past year. I think you might be interested in what I found :) https://bloomberry.com/the-state-of-remote-work/
