The Magic Behind the Metric

Over the past few months I have been developing a leadership program that I’ll soon be offering to those who desire to grow as leaders. I hope to have several versions and applications to meet the various needs of customers. One topic I have worked on for my Process Improvement audience is, “The Magic Behind the Metric.”

Anyone can learn process improvement. The tools of Lean and Six Sigma can be leveraged by anyone who has the desire and discipline to apply them. What isn’t so easy is the skills needed when engaging teams to use the tools.

I’m not musically inclined; however, I do have a deep appreciation for music. When I was growing up in the suburbs of Atlanta Georgia our neighbor was the nephew of the late country guitarist Chet Atkins. Like his uncle, he was a really good guitarist and singer. Not being critical but for whatever reason, his musical abilities were limited to local country bars and parties. Great talent, but limited influence.

Now compare that to Gene Simmons of the band KISS. Gene is an average musician. He plays the bass fair and his vocals are mediocre. But Gene has a unique ability to connect. He takes his average musical abilities and makes a loud splash! As a result, he has led his band to fill stadiums across the world and built a mega million-dollar empire.

An exceptional musician limited on his impact compared to an average player who has seemingly no limits. Why is this? It’s the skills around the tools. It’s one thing to play the guitar and another to play to the crowd.

Within process improvement it’s one thing to know and use the tools, but it is another to play to the crowd for whom those tools are for. The soft skills that accompany change leaders make the difference in whether there is a packed stadium or a few bubbas in desolate bar. It’s can mean the difference whether change is forced or welcomed.

I’m looking forward to rolling out The Magic Behind the Metric soon. If you’re interested send me a message with your email and I’ll keep you updated as time gets closer to offering this exciting leadership program.
