Dear Friends,

On June 11th, Dr. Vasan spoke at Gracie Mansion at an event to introduce the first 16 HealthyNYC ‘Champions’ - organizations that have signed on to support the city’s goal of promoting longer, healthier lives in New York City.

In speaking about HealthyNYC, Dr. Vasan said, “It takes all of us, working as a team, to create a healthier New York and a healthier world. As we learned in the pandemic, we are strongest when we have clear alignment and a purpose...that brings together government, private sector, philanthropic and nonprofit sectors into a common mission.”

I can happily say that when it comes to Team FPHNYC in the TCS NYC Marathon, our runners are 100% aligned on running to raise awareness and needed funds for Health Department programs that will improve maternal health. We held a kickoff meeting with the team the other day and I’m excited to stay abreast of our team’s progress over the next months.Let’s keep up our momentum, and don’t forget to stay cool in this summer heat!

Warmly,

Sara Gardner , Chief Executive Officer

A Successful Lunch n' Learn with Commissioner Vasan!

We were incredibly honored to have NYC Health Commissioner and FPHNYC Board Chair, Dr. Ashwin Vasan, join us for an enlightening lunch and learn session on June 6th! 🥪📚 Dr. Vasan shared a wealth of knowledge about the goals of #HealthyNYC and highlighted the critical role of public health initiatives in creating a healthier community. His insights into health equity, preventative care, and community health strategies were inspiring and thought-provoking.

It was a unique opportunity to hear directly from a leading voice in public health about the efforts to improve health outcomes for all New Yorkers. We left the session feeling empowered and motivated to contribute to our shared mission of building a healthier, stronger New York City. Thank you, Dr. Vasan, for your time, wisdom, and commitment to our city's well-being!

Meet Shannon Reilly our 11th Runner!

Shannon Reilly  (She/Her) Shannon has run two marathons and this will be her first New York City Marathon! She has been running since high school and fell in love with long-distance running after moving to NYC three years ago. A Healthy Grant Award

FPHNYC was recently awarded a $5 million, five-year grant from HRSA for Healthy Start Brooklyn. This program, administered in partnership with the NYC Health Department, supports mothers and babies to improve health in communities experiencing high disparities in maternal and infant health outcomes. FPHNCY is one of only six organizations in NY state to receive this highly sought-after federal funding. Congratulations to all involved across teams!

FPHNYC has earned the highest level of recognition – Platinum Transparency – accorded to nonprofits by GuideStar, the highly trusted nonprofit evaluation service (part of Candid, following a 2019 merger of GuideStar and the Foundation Center). FPHNYC had previously received a Gold Seal of Transparency and we continue to update our profile with information useful to funders.

Celebrating Pride Month: NYC Health Dept. Champions LGBTQ+ Health & Safety

Throughout June, the Health Department has joined New York City in celebrating the diversity and resilience of the city’s lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, gender nonconforming and non-binary, queer, and intersex (LGBTQ+) communities. They have also been distributing free safer sex products and health promotional materials at celebrations across the city.

The Health Department’s float in this year’s Pride March (June 30) will promote the updated “Be HIV Sure” sexual health marketing campaign, which encourages New Yorkers to get tested for HIV, know their HIV status and seek out the sexual health services they need.

FPHNYC Grant Writing Workshop

On May 16th, FPHNYC partnered with the Department of Health to empower attendees through a comprehensive Grant Writing Workshop! Over 60 participants gained expertise in securing public and private funding for their organization, including writing a proposal, developing a budget, and promoting their work on social media to increase their visibility to the funding community. The hands-on workshop kept participants engaged with live polls, breakout rooms for crafting sample pitches, and a fun raffle at the end, leaving everyone energized and equipped to secure funding and achieve long-term sustainability.
