Interpreting Provider Scores and Metrics

Interpreting Provider Scores and Metrics

Choosing a physician is a daunting task.

Patients want to know they’ll be working with a physician who:

·         Is worthy of their trust

·         Has produced positive outcomes in other patients with the same condition

·         Won’t prescribe inappropriate care

Typical online reviews don’t treat any of these criteria.

They’re more likely to be influenced by subjective feelings around personal connection, bedside manner or how well the physician’s office is run.

One positive or one negative social interaction between a patient and a member of the doctor’s staff can prompt a glowing or overly critical review.

A patient hunting for a good doctor can’t easily tell if a patient’s Google review is evaluating relevant criteria or reflects a personal bias irrelevant to the care he or she received.

Patients who are diligent may research tips on interpreting online reviews.

Among the advice they’ll find is: “Talk with any doctor you’re considering to ensure that person can meet your individual needs.”

Faced with the idea of booking calls and interviewing a half-dozen doctors, patients’ sense of overwhelm continues to build.

At that point they may decide geographical proximity is enough criteria and call it a day.

The opportunity to direct the patient to a high value provider is now lost.

Your members want data about provider performance so they can feel confident about the care they’ll receive.

But they need that data in a format that’s easy to interpret.

Health plans need to offer information that allows them to include patients in the effort to drive value and reduce wasteful spending.
