I Love Working at Doherty and So Would You

If you have had the chance to talk to me recently, you have probably found out that I truly love my job. I think that Doherty is a great company to work for and I have an awesome manager. I came into this job with no intention of making it a career, but as of right now, I am now planning to stick with this company until I retire. I was recently offered the opportunity to change territories and am looking for someone to take over my Mankato/Marshall territory. I wrote this short article to explain why I love this company in the hopes that you or someone you know will consider joining us

Through Doherty I can make a difference

Prior to starting my career at Doherty, I was seeking a career in city administration in the hopes of making an impact on people's lives. While it is not always the first thought on people's minds when they think of staffing firms, as an employee, it is easy to see the impact you make on people's lives by putting them to work. My company serves two functions: to put people to work and to help companies meet the needs of their customers. It is very easy to notice the difference that you make on people's lives by putting them to work. In my first, partial year in my new role at Doherty, employees placed at my client companies worked a total of 13,904 hours. Each one of these hours worked allowed an employee to improve their quality of life, pay their rent, build their resume, and for many of them, it resulted in a full-time job. Less noticeable, but just as real, is the impact it makes on companies. Because of the work that our recruiters and I have done, meals have been prepared, turkeys have been cooked for a Thanksgiving celebration, gift cards have been received, animals have been fed, lawn mowers have been built, and more. While it is impossible to quantify, one of our on-site representatives is responsible for a large portion of the development of Minnesota's new U.S. Bank Stadium, because she found the employees who manufactured the stadium's glass.

The Doherty Family

Doherty is a family owned company, which is great; however, a lot of companies are family owned. What makes Doherty exceptional is that this family atmosphere exists between myself and my coworkers. As teams reduce in size from the entire company down to individual offices, that family-like bond grows stronger between members of those teams. I am as close with my counterpart on our sales team and my sales manager as I am with my closest friends and family members. Being in sales, we drive a lot, but we frequently use those hours to talk to each other on the phone and keep up do date on each other's lives. Within Doherty's Southern Minnesota Division, we have a North team and a South team and each of these teams are incredibly close. Recently, our South Side Service Manager helped organize a baby shower for one of her employees.

Room for Vertical and Horizontal Mobility

Working at Doherty is a great resume builder. People looking for an HR career, work at Doherty as a way to take their first step into the HR world. When a Doherty employee in the early stages of their career finds a new opportunity and moves on, we celebrate it, calling it their "graduation." With that said, Doherty also looks for people who want to make Doherty their long-term career. As I mentioned earlier, I was hired with the expectation that I would one day "graduate;" however, the opportunities that Doherty has offered me have helped me make the decision to stay here. Doherty is continually expanding and we are always looking for opportunities to promote recruiting specialists to staffing specialists, or to promote either of these workers to on-site representatives and on-site managers. Every member of our management team started their career with Doherty as a recruiter and we recently created three new supervisory positions so we can give employees the opportunity to move up.

Additionally, Doherty is willing to train. We love to see a college degree and we love customer service experience, but we require neither. Prior to coming to Doherty, members of our management team worked at a casino, bartended, managed a gas station, and worked as a temporary employee through Doherty. By focusing on potential rather than experience, we put together a team of people who are great at their jobs. Other companies may have passed these employees up.

Doherty is ethical

Our company CEO, Val Doherty, graduated with a degree from the University of Minnesota Law School. There are many gray areas in Minnesota employment law that other staffing agencies take advantage of in order to save time and money, but due to Val's personal morals and legal background, she and her husband Tim have made it clear that Doherty will never work in gray areas, even when it costs us money. This ethical mindset earned us the Minnesota Business Ethics Award in 2014; the only staffing firm to hold that honor. I appreciate the fact that I can go to work knowing I won't need to question the ethics of anything this company asks me to do.

Ryan Vesey Thank you for such an encouraging post! It made me think of something I read earlier this week (and wrote about): the 2017 Gallup State of the Global Workplace report which states: "85% of employees worldwide are either not engaged or actively disengaged in their jobs." It's a trend that, according to Gallup, has not improved for over the last decade. The report also stated: "Employers in any society create conditions that either develop or deplete the stock of human capital on which that society’s future depends." It's that second part that I focused on -- because I do believe it's up to each of us to create meaning in our work and to contribute to healthy, positive and productive workplaces. Your post is a shining example of that and gives hope to the possibility of reversing such a discouraging trend re: engagement. Thank you!
