How a Multi-Persona Job Search Approach Vastly Improves Your Odds

As a As a child, my father taught me to fish. Back then he explained that fish could be very fickle and that what worked one day may not work the next. That’s why he suggested that I have several different lures in my tackle box - and to change things up to see what worked best on any given day.

As a Nashville-based recruiter, I’ve learned over the years that job searches aren’t that different than fishing trips. Hiring managers with positions to fill can be just as fickle as fish. You know they’re below the surface somewhere – but it’s a daily mystery as to what will make them bite when you’re eager to put a few in the boat.

That’s why we often suggest that candidates create at least two or three personas – or personal brands - before they begin a job search.

Let me provide an example. Let’s say that you’re currently serving as a sales manager for a team of professionals selling software to companies – but you’re wondering what else is out there, career-wise, in the fast-growing city of Nashville.

You might create one resume that positions you as a top-performing technology sales leader. That one will be easy, because that’s what you’re doing now. Perhaps, though, you’ve always thought it would be fulfilling to serve as a Head of Sales Training – so a resume focusing on that particular skill would likely be wise, as well. And, finally, you’ve long considered entering the healthcare sales field – but feel it’s unlikely you would go directly into a sales management role – so repackage yourself as an individual performer and show how your skills will be fully transferable into the healthcare field.

We would create three different resumes (lures) that are tailored to each type of position (fish) – because it’s all about relevance. Each resume must be carefully crafted to yield interviews (bites). And because job searching is often a game of math – you better your odds of catching something with the more casts you make into different parts and depths of the lake.

If you need a Nashville fishing guide, we at FiveChairs know these waters like the backs of our hands. And if you need one or more trusty lures to increase the odds of landing what you’re fishing for – we craft effective and affordable resumes and Linkedin Profiles with very sharp hooks.

If you believe you need some help - regardless of where you live in the U.S. - send your current resume and a brief explanation of your career goals to resumes@fivechairs.com. If you place “Fishing” in the subject line, we’ll provide branding advice, tailored to you, over the phone – for a limited period of time.

P.S. The fish are biting. It’s a good time to throw a line in the water.
