How to drive continuous innovation in a global consulting and engineering company? Case: Building next generation Pöyry

This year, our company is celebrating its 60th anniversary. In the spirit of our founder, Dr Jaakko Pöyry, we strive towards continuous innovation for our clients and are developing our company into a High Performance Organisation.

Being in the fortunate position of having more than 5000 experts with phenomenal expertise in industries such as Energy, Infra, Water, Environment, and Industry, there is never a shortage of ideas - and when we connect them together, that’s when the magic happens.

So how are we bringing these great ideas to life?

To ensure these great ideas are transformed into concrete solutions for our clients, it is crucial that we connect to each other from more than 40 countries worldwide. This is not an easy feat as anyone working in a global company will know!

To support our Vision of The connected company, driving customer solutions through connecting our experts, we have recently launched our “Pöyry Innovation Platform” – a cloud-based solution where our intrapreneurs connect on so-called ‘challenges’. A challenge is defined by a key question coming out of the megatrends driving our world or a customer question upon which our intrapreneurs can post, collaborate and vote for ideas. The winners of the challenge receive support and funding in implementation to bring the customer ideas to life.

The social media elements within the Pöyry Innovation Platform enable any employee to obtain feedback and support from any Pöyry employee in any part of our company network. These elements make it easier for ideas to be filtered, refined, sponsored and built upon collectively. This social and dynamic approach further accelerates the pace of innovation.

When testing the Platform, the very first challenge implemented was with 100+ talented young Pöyry intrapreneurs who are inspiring transformation from within and do not hold management positions. The challenge was on “Automation” and we received some brilliant ideas, which are being converted right now. Pöyry is growing and investing in its modern culture of empowerment and innovation - at all levels. The Pöyry Innovation Platform supports the strength of our culture and unique Pöyry DNA.

It is great to see the increased collaboration among Business Units, supporting each other to bring the best value for clients. During our celebrations of the 60th anniversary of our company, we will be celebrating some of the great achievements generated out of these challenges.

Congratulations to the teams for driving the continuous innovation culture towards the next generation Pöyry!

Interesting post, however, seems that all these innovations challenges are opened just for young ones(?) Or is it s combination with experienced others?

Innovation platforms great tools to grow ideas further into new businesses and an open and disruptive culture helps a lot in this task in any company! ..And in many cases today there is no box, but a rolling and jumping ball instead - which makes it a bit more challenging to stay tuned and outside the continuously changing and updating conventional!
