The Future is Now

The Future is Now

It started with a tremor…

When the skills that businesses needed became increasingly specialized. Technologies evolved so quickly that acronyms like AI, IoT, and BI became common language and competitive necessities in businesses across all industries.

The tremor became a rumble…

As companies scrambled to find employees. The talent pool continued shrinking as the unemployment rate dropped. Job vacancies remained open for 36 days on average.

The rumble is now a roar…

As millennials streamed into the workforce demanding more flexibility and freedom at work. A Freelancing in America survey shows nearly half (47%) of millennials freelance, and they see it as viable a career option as taking a traditional job, which also set an example for the next generation of workers.

The thing is, these challenges and changes haven’t abated over the past few years. Instead, they built up so much pressure on companies today that changing how you get work done isn’t just for those willing to step up to the leading edge. It’s for any company that wants to remain competitive. Which is why more than half (53%) of companies use more flexible workers now than before.

This trend is predicted to rise as the shortage of in-demand talent increases. Even New York City, rated the top U.S. tech city mainly because of its large talent pool, is scrambling to fill a growing number of empty seats.

These technological, economic, and social forces are driving companies to a single truth: You must change how you get work done and how you approach engaging talent. Because traditional hiring practices aren’t enough anymore.

I call this the big shift.

How work gets done and who does the work is different now. Flexible talent enables companies to scale quickly, access specialized talent as needed, expand capabilities cost-effectively, and innovate faster.

But it’s not enough to simply agree; it’s time to take action. The roar is quickly becoming an earthquake. Because the big shift—this shift in adopting flexible talent—is happening now.

My question to you is: Will this happen with you or to you?

Totally agree with you, Eric. The labor market is changing now. And Upwork is platform #1 for outsourcing activities as well as for regulating cooperation between companies/freelancers and employers.
