As cities swell with more than half of the global population already in urban settings and 43 megacities projected by 2030, the demands for clean water, effective sanitation, and efficient transportation only intensify.

These solutions are vital for managing rapid urbanization and advancing sustainability and decarbonization. The deployment of such technologies, however, faces significant financial and integration hurdles.

This technology not only reshapes new developments like Seestadt Aspern in Vienna and Expo City in Dubai but also revitalizes historic areas such as Berlin Siemensstadt.

A Digital Twin for Berlin Siemensstadt

As Siemensstadt transitions from an industrial base to a knowledge-based economy, the area is being transformed into Siemensstadt Square. Supported by a €750 million investment from Siemens and a total of €4 billion from various partners, the redevelopment began with a groundbreaking ceremony in June. At its core, an end-to-end digital twin serves as the backbone for planning and operating the district's buildings and infrastructure, enabling the early identification of challenges and the development of solutions.

The digital twin ecosystem integrates three layers—Building, Energy, and Campus Twins—to streamline decision-making and enhance urban development efficiency.
