Digital never sleeps, here’s the top stories from the week.

YouTube presents their future of the platform, Pinterest gives Pantone a run for their money, and Reddit have agreed a multi million deal to sell their data to an unnamed AI company.

📰 Global authorities take control of LockBit a dark-web ransom website

An effort between the UK's National Crime Agency, and the US FBI has resulted in successfully taking control of LockBit, a ransom website that publicly lists its victims and threatens to release their data if they don’t pay a ransom. They have hacked some of the world’s largest organisations including Boeing, Royal Mail and India’s state owned aerospace research lab.

📰 Pinterest Highlights Key Colour Palettes For 2024

Move over Pantone, there’s a new colour trend chart in town! This one belongs to Pinterest who have published key colour themes for 2024 and how these colours have been used across their pins - amazing insight for brands for the next 12 months.

📰 The EU is now investigating TikTok

Following on from the child safety hearing in the US the EU has its own set of issues it’s investigating, including algorithms that are enforcing addictive behaviour, or what they call the ‘rabbit hole’ effect which is designed to keep you logged on for longer. In fact Harvard did a deep dive into how smart phones trigger your dopamine levels back in 2018.

📰 YouTube updates and their vision for 2024

YouTube’s vision for the future is to be an indispensable media hub.We’ve seen some of this starting to happen with the introduction of YouTube Shorts designed to rival TikTok, but they’re now introducing RSS feeds for audio only podcasts and adding in colour filtered feeds, in case all you want to watch is videos with pink thumbnails.

📰 Reddit is selling data for AI training

The company has signed a $60million deal with an unnamed AI company providing access to its huge database of subreddits from well known to obscure users. Bolstering its potential revenue streams which will look attractive to potential investors ahead of its IPO later on this year.

We Are Social and Meltwater have released new survey results that show that the average UK social media user spent over 49 hours on TikTok in January this year. 

The next social media site is YouTube at 19 hours showing the influencer that TikTok now has amongst users in the UK.


However it’s still third in terms of time spent on entertainment with the Internet and TV taking first and second place respectively.
