External Data University: Issue #14

🌅 Keep Your Eyes Peeled: A New Crux Product is on the Horizon…

Crux is dedicated to solving the unique challenges of external data integration, transformation, and observability. We’ve been working on something new. It’s for data engineers who want to save a whole lot of time and energy.

This sounds like me: We’ll start opening up applications for early access soon and want to give you first dibs at a chance to be a beta user. If you want to skip to the front of the line, just add a comment to this newsletter or email scout.scholes@cruxdata.com and let me know.

⛏️ New Use Cases Emerging in 2023

Something old and something new…do we have a use case that’s borrowed or blue, too? A common prediction for 2023 is already proving true. Two new use cases have emerged in the ESG market.

What are they? Thanks for asking. Using ESG data is currently proposed to help with mining and data storage operations. These two very different industries are proving how utilitarian ESG data can be, regardless of your industry.

How is it helping with mining? The mining industry is often synonymous with pollution and is a hot topic on all ends of the political spectrum across the globe. The idea is that analysts can help mining companies make more sustainable choices for production and supply chains to cut their emissions.

That sounds like an oxymoron. Maybe, but every little change can quickly add up in the fight against global warming. The other new use case–data storage–seems more related to today’s common use cases for ESG.

So data is using data? In short, yes. Data storage centers have recently been battling climate crises to ensure they don’t go offline and that major cloud providers can still support customers regardless of the weather. But, with an increasing look at scope 3 emissions, these storage centers are also on the hook for their high energy and water consumption in the push for carbon neutrality.

👀 What We’re Watching

☁️ The Focus on Cloud Observability Will Increase in 2023

It’s no secret that the cloud is the way forward, especially regarding data storage. On-prem solutions are outdated, and the cloud allows for more layers of complexity and depth for your data that scales quickly and efficiently.

Okay, so what’s changing? Nothing huge, yet. But with the continuously increasing complexity of ungoverned data sources, observability is the next gap in the data market ready to be filled. And just like any other tool in your tech stack, your IT team needs a front-row seat to what’s happening in real-time to keep up with the benefit-to-cost ratio the transition to the cloud brings.
