- Branch Technology is a Tennessee-based startup specializing in 3D printing large structures using cellular fabrication techniques. The patented technology can create custom-designed parts of various shapes and sizes.

One founder of such a company told me that construction technology investors typically avoid hardware startups. The difficulty of scaling fast might worry the investors.

Where Are All The Affordable Housing Startups?
Despite the ongoing demand for affordable housing in the U.S., funding for startups in efficient construction and affordable housing has declined, according to Crunchbase. Recent examples like the collapse of Katerra and the struggles of Boxabl and Veev highlight the challenges. Archinect reports a current shortfall of up to 7 million homes, yet investments remain lukewarm. Factors contributing to these difficulties include volatile markets, stringent regulations, and a venture capital culture ill-suited for the long-term nature of housing innovations. The construction startup scene contrasts starkly with other tech sectors, facing unique barriers that hinder the disruption needed to address housing shortages effectively.
Production starts on 3D-printed ‘printfrastructure’ components for water industry
UK-based water company United Utilities, digital printing company Changemaker 3D, Manchester Metropolitan University, and Scottish Water have established a ‘3D concrete printing hub’ to print components. United Utilities said that the hub at Wigan Wastewater Treatment Works would allow it to print assets for us in the sector in hours, compared to the several days it would normally take. It claimed that the process also generates carbon savings of up to 50%.
