Digital Footprints and Hiring: How AI and Big data is changing "the hiring process"

Above conversation can make a perfect case study for something we've been pushing for a while. In the conversation, the recruiter tries to know seeker's interest/personality by questioning about his failures, classic old school technique from the books of Recruitment 101, however! the context keeps changing from time to time, finding a way to rectify the answer is tricky. there's a lot of blog posts/how to's stating people to respond their activity in social media!

The founder of "Rebecca Fraser Consulting" shares her top tips for taking care of one's digital footprints
  • Ensure all post information remains private
  • Never appear derogatory, negative or rude
  • Be aware of what others are posting about you
  • images you are being tagged in online
  • Keep your personal and professional lives separate.

(you can find the article here)

The above Article was written in early 2015, and its content is about to fade out in later 2016, (this also shows you how fast the AI and big data is changing the world) following are the reasons why few points mentioned by Rebecca Fraser is not eligible anymore!

Private Information isn't private

Recruiter used to check employer's profile to get an idea about one's given information, however this is a black-box step, it can certainly help employer know if there's anything fishy about the candidate (for example, if one wrote he/she is vegan, and the recruiter finds her/him, eating a big steak on a public facebook post) Privatising things could help the about to be employee in this case.

But now, Social Bots are one click away from accessing their entire data since the day they've joined facebook (or any other social media account) the entire data could get captured via API's and the magical powers of big data analytics and AI explores the person as a subject!

(NOTE: The user has the end permission to allow such apps, this is perhaps the only thing which makes it a white-hat-practice)

Appearing derogatory, talkative, rude may help!

This is perhaps the best thing about this technology, it may not matter how talkative or rude you are, or if you are targeting someone specific, until and unless it's not your words! I'll give an example.

let's suppose you updated: "I hate this restaurant! Ugh!" @ Rajasthani Kitchen

With the previous rule of not being rude or appearing derogatory could've gone wrong for the employer this time! but not with the new laws!

social bots could determine the number of people who disliked the restaurant, and it could appear that the restaurant had bad food! so the final implication of the bot could be the like this:

  • the subject is honest
  • the subject isn't afraid to speak out in the public
  • the subject doesn't like food with oil (presuming the restaurant's reviews via zomato)

hence proving positivity of the candidate!

Game changing right? :)

Being Tagged by someone

The old rules mercilessly targeted employer's friends/family for their personality! not in the new system!

Social bots could easily determine about the content owner, YOU ARE RESPONSIBLE ONLY FOR YOUR POST! however, it could be a problem if your best friend posted an embarrassing hangover pictures of you!

Keeping things Separate(PRIVATE LIFE - PUBLIC LIFE)

Keeping things separate goes without saying, but in spite of keeping it separate, one must remember the golden rule of this technology. ie "Be You" no matter what! public or private social bots could access your feed (if permitted) the only thing matters are the words you are using. which could be essential to determine the big five and other personality details like values, and needs.

it's fascinating to see how technology could actually help you finding your dream job, as well as finding the right candidate! :)

Summary:

  • Big Data, AI, Social Bots, could be responsible for your new job
  • Rules of managing your online profile is changing
  • Being yourself could be the best policy.

We at justIntern.com are working hard to put HR's in a better updated way by providing some of the features mentioned above, we're about to release beta version soon! do drop me a message on linkedIn for beta invitation.
