Creating a More Diverse and Equitable Model of Cancer Care

Creating a More Diverse and Equitable Model of Cancer Care

This week, the world’s leading cancer minds are gathering at #ASCO22 to share and discuss the latest in oncology research. For many, it will be the first opportunity to gather in person since the start of the COVID-19 pandemic. I’m excited so many of our scientists will have a chance not only to join this dialogue, but also to reconnect with colleagues and friends as we continue our work to drive progress for cancer patients around the world.

The theme of this year’s meeting is: Advancing Equitable Cancer Care Through Innovation. While the world of oncology continues to see exciting advancements in the treatment of multiple cancer types, there’s still work to do to build a model for cancer care that ensures all patients, no matter their race or socioeconomic status, have similar and equitable access to screening, diagnosis, and treatments.

For too many, the outcome of their cancer journey will be negatively affected by where they live, work, or learn. These social determinants of health can create disparities that contribute to worse outcomes. Whether because of institutional racism, poverty, lack of access to screenings, or other factors, gaps exist that prevent patients from getting the right treatment at the right time.

I’m proud of the work Merck is doing to close these gaps. We’re working to enhance care delivery for vulnerable and underserved populations through the Merck Alliance for Equity in Cancer Care. And we’re providing education to help empower patients to advocate for themselves through programs which help people who are at increased risk for lung cancer understand the most common signs of the disease and how to seek screening.

There’s work to do, and it’s going to take all of us. But I’m excited to be part of the solution, and I’m proud that Merck is showing its commitment to creating a more diverse and equitable model of care.

This is critically important. How do we make the invisible, visible and help them in unique and personalized ways? It creates engagement which is critical to health success.
