Creating A Better Future In Mobility With Patents

Creating A Better Future In Mobility With Patents

Q. What is the most important part of automobile electrification?

A. Taesik Kim / R&D Master

The fail-operation feature would be the most important. An SbW system being developed by HL, the system requires an ASIL-D class safety, the most strict safety guidelines provided by ISO 26262 (car-related international standard for safety). Without adequate safety verification and an appropriate safety manual, there always is a chance that an accident will happen. You never know; so you need to structure a safety system.

Q. What is the future of automotive electrification, including EVs?

A. Taesik Kim / R&D Master

EVs is expected to account for 60% of all vehicles in the market by 2030, leading to an increased exposure of the vehicles among more people. The preference for EVs can change depending on international politics, oil prices, taxes and subsidies/grants, technological advancement, and others. However, such factors do not change the fact that EVs reduce the exhaustion of toxic substances and carbon emissions, as well as allow for more use of sustainable fuels, I think electrification will continue to be a trend.

Q. In what are HL Klemove’s sensors competitive in the autonomous driving market?

A. Yunki Han / Senior Researcher

HL Klemove was the first Korean company to develop a radar independently. After manufacturing our first-generation radars, we are developing the fourth generation. Ultra-high frequency hardware including an antenna, development for a signal interpretation algorithm and application logic, and manufacturing know-how is what makes HL Klemove attractive compared to our international competitors. Our low-cost mid-range radar that minimizes both design costs and performance degradation has a competitive edge in the global market.

Q. The amount of patents you two have is impressive. Why are you so eager to have your creations patented?

A. Taesik Kim / R&D Master

Ultimately, for the competitiveness of the company. We focus on getting patents not only to make reasonably priced, high-performing, and durable products but also to occupy the technology that differentiates us from our competitors in advance to enhance the competitive edge of our company and to protect its intellectual property.

A. Yunki Han / Senior Researcher

Being involved in the preliminary development of our radars and lidar, I realized that we need a lot of good patents to mass-produce these products. HL Klemove has “Patent Day” events, which are mini-workshops that guide people to apply for new patents. Our vice president, Hyung jin Kang, and CEO, Paljoo Yoon, supported the event very much, allowing me to get numerous patents.

Q. What are your goals and ambitions?

A. Taesik Kim / R&D Master

I attribute this award not only to my effort but to everyone who supported me and cooperated with my work. All the collaborations with various teams and advice from the head of the research center are what made this award possible. I will take this award as a symbol to push myself forward and keep in mind the love and care everyone has shown me thus far.

A. Yunki Han / Senior Researcher

I was bewildered because there are so many others who work much harder and are much smarter than me. I think of the award as encouragement from others, and I will try my best to achieve even more meaningful results in the future.
