On 22 February, the Chandler Foundation launched Social Investor, the latest publication from the Chandler Foundation. The publication includes articles from leading thought leaders including Rockefeller Foundation President Dr. Rajiv Shah, RISE Fund CEO Bill McGlashan, Skoll Social Entrepreneur Awardees Debbie Aung Din and Jim Taylor, and Omidyar Network's Matt Bannick and Robynn Steffen. Social Investor challenges conventional thinking and explores how capital can be used more effectively to sow the seeds of lasting social change.

The Rise of the Social Investor

This year’s magazine also reflects a profound shift underway across the philanthropic landscape, as more individuals and organizations embrace impact investing, big bets, and collaborative philanthropy.

The array of approaches highlighted in Social Investor are all united by a common desire to direct capital with greater focus than ever before. Today’s social investors are discarding outdated models and mindsets, while rethinking the traditional borders and paradigms that once governed philanthropy.

The Art of “Narrow and Deep”

Of particular focus in this issue are “big bet” investments. Lasting legacies start with big dreams and audacious goals. Big bets can often make the difference between incremental change and sustainable breakthroughs. Social Investor examines the heritage of these step-change investments, and features insights from those who have received big bets as well as those who have made them. Both agree that such bold, “narrow and deep” investments call for as much creativity as they do courage – a willingness to embrace the unconventional in pursuit of the transformational.
