Blue Shield of California Celebrates 5th Anniversary of Wellvolution

A lot can happen in five years. Today, we at Blue Shield of California ShieldofCalifornia are proud to celebrate the five year anniversary of #Wellvolution, our award-winning digital health platform that’s supported 355,000 members in setting and achieving health goals related to weight loss, mental health, diabetes, and more.

Since 2019, Wellvolution’s diverse set of lifestyle-based tools and support has helped members address the root causes of health issues and build sustainable healthy habits. As part of our mission in creating a healthcare system worthy of our friends and family and sustainability affordable, we’ve worked tirelessly to expand the offering and personalize it in the most effective way for all Californians.

In 2023, Wellvolution expanded to offer personalized, specific care to the Medi-Cal population, Spanish speakers, those dealing with high blood pressure, and even programs for Musculoskeletal (MSK) health needs.

The impact of these programs has been nothing short of astounding. We’ve connected a massive percentage of our members — from ages 18-97 — to the additional, personalized support they need, with members having spent a total of 156 million minutes engaging with Wellvolution programs.

Further, over the past five years of Wellvolution, we’ve validated just how many types of care can be effectively facilitated digitally, including #mentalhealth support, where 43% of Wellvolution enrollees are using a program that supports them in this area. In fact, through our partnership with Headspace , 74% of members who reported moderate to severe depression symptoms at intake of the Wellvolution program reported their symptoms improved.

Meanwhile, 19% of members on the platform are enrolled in a weight management program, one of our flagship offerings since the start of this endeavor in 2019. Through exercise and nutrition coaching on the Wellvolution app, members participating in the program have lost a total of 272,880 pounds. Along with this, members with diabetes were able to cut more than half of their medications out of their daily lives thanks to the collaboration with Virta Health.

Digital health and wellness solutions have undoubtedly taken off and flooded the market since the COVID-19 pandemic, but Wellvolution was truly ahead of the curve. Rather than developing a digital tool in a hurried, reactionary manner due to a global need, our team proactively and thoughtfully built out this platform with each of our member’s wellbeing and ease-of-care in mind.

Since then, we’ve only continued making improvements, adding care capabilities and programs, and pulling in key partners that are helping us provide top-of-the line care in a growing list of areas. To that end, we’re thrilled to welcome four new partners and programs to our platform:

●      Ciba Health – platform focused on preventing, treating, and reversing diabetes and obesity

●      DarioHealth – Extended diabetes care

●      Digbi Health – Personalized treatment for obesity, cardiometabolic, and digestive health issues

●      Wondr Health – Provides self-service materials including master class videos and behavior change programs, for weight management
