Black History Month Staff Spotlight - Matt Eldridge

We continue to honor and celebrate Black History Month by highlighting some of our amazing staff members. Matthew Eldridge answers questions below about his experience, passions, and work within the community.

What is your title and how long have you worked at United Way?

  • My title is Staff Accountant and I’ve been here for 1 year.

How has United Way impacted you?

  • United Way has profoundly influenced me by instilling a deep sense of purpose and community engagement in my work and personal life.

What is the most meaningful part of your job?

  • The most fulfilling aspect of my role is knowing that every number I work with contributes to making a tangible difference in the lives of those in our community. I love being able to help support the growth and progression of communities similar to the one that raised me.

What are your hobbies/passions outside of work?

  •  Outside of work, you’ll often find me under the barbell powerlifting or lost in the pages of a good book.

What does Black History Month mean to you?

  •  For me, Black History Month is a time for reflection, celebration, and honoring the invaluable contributions of Black Americans throughout history.

How can all community members observe, celebrate, and honor Black History Month?

  • All community members can observe, celebrate, and honor Black History Month by amplifying Black voices, supporting Black-owned businesses, and educating themselves on Black history and culture.

What is your hope for our communities in the future?

  • My hope for our communities in the future is one of unity, equity, and inclusivity, where everyone has equal opportunities to thrive and succeed.

The 2024 Black History Month theme is "African Americans and the Arts" spanning the many impacts Black Americans have had on visual arts, music, cultural movements, and more. What is your favorite quote or impact story from a Black artist?

  • One of my favorite quotes is from Maya Angelou: “My mission in life is not merely to survive, but to thrive; and to do so with some passion, some compassion, some humor, and some style.” It’s a powerful reminder of resilience, strength, and the importance of living life to its fullest.
