Better Late Than Never: Plan Your Next Career Move NOW

2016 is right around the corner.  Have you established any career goals for next year yet?  If not, you still have about 15 more days before the end of the year.  Below are some of the things I do daily, and I recommend everyone to do the same for the next 15 days.

1.) Take a panoramic view of your industry and field

Admit it, technologies are evolving quicker than anyone can follow.  With the rapidly changing technology landscape comes the rapidly changing industry trends.  The last thing you want is to get caught in a massive layoff from your company, and left with a skill set that is obsolete.  To prevent that, you can either follow news on LinkedIn or set a Google Alert for news about your work.  For example, as a headhunter, I know which companies are laying off people, or experiencing a shift in executive leadership.  I am also aware of the types of technology and in what geographies are companies receiving funding.  I make it a goal to stay informed so I can remain a thought leader in this ever-changing job market.

2.) Put yourself out there and establish thought leadership

I set aside time on a weekly basis to write about talent acquisition and career development.  Getting noticed is just one of the benefits.  As the demand for good content goes up, the need for me to write intelligent and informative content goes up as well, which means I need to talk to other professionals, attend events and read up.  At the same time, when you publish your articles, you are inviting people to challenge your point of view, or add to your knowledge bank.

3.)  Pay if forward

It is not my nature to be generous with my time and knowledge.  But I have learned to do so because of what others have done for me.  I have asked people on LinkedIn, people I have never met, for help.  Sometimes it is about a survey; sometimes it is to speak at one of my Meetup events; sometimes for referrals.  Time and time again they pull through for me.  It has taught me to do the same thing for others and not expect any returns.  As you would have guessed it, connections I made ultimately develop into wonderful professional relationships that have become my clients and long-term business partners.

By following the above 3 steps you will gain valuable insights in your current field, and they can guide you as you plan your next career move in 2016.  If you have other recommendations, please share with us in the comment section below.
