Greetings and salutations cannabis enthusiasts!

Saving a company's culture, especially when it has been struggling or failing, is a challenging but essential endeavor. Company culture plays a crucial role in shaping the behavior, attitudes, and values of employees, which in turn affects overall performance, innovation, and long-term success. In this month's newsletter I articulate why its never to late to change a company's culture and provide some meaningful steps to get the process started.

Also, Jason is breaks down the importance of Compensation Design via a short webinar interview with our illustrious CEO, David Belsky. Be sure to check it out.

I’m not much for dogma. Cannabis is a space where “new ways” can and should find footing and where “old ways” can be recalibrated and improved upon. Classical business methods feel dated, but they are also instructive and accessible. So, naturally, we try to find ways in which we can incorporate the old-old with the new-new. The time and pace of the space demand our full and immediate attention. So we must compromise by implementing the methods of the past in hopes that this new business paradigm will fix the past despite its appearance.

On rare occasions, I come across a book where “it just fits.” Tom Peter’s Extreme Humanism is a book that I’ve come to realize may very well be the perfect encapsulation of what being in business is all about (spoiler: it’s to help one another). Great business related books make you question not just the space you inhabit but also the person you are within it.

So, for this article, I am going to focus on how culture shows us who we are in the space, what we should want for one another, and most importantly, how to reconcile a malfunctioning, malformed, or broken culture code via five easily digestible vignettes you can scroll through quickly so you don’t hurt your attention span.

In our current inflationary climate, compensation is a sore point for most Americans. Simply because salary and hourly have not kept pace with inflation. But how could it? It's been a rapid rise post-COVID. I think salary is important, but so is culture, and recognition. Career development and on-the-job training, where employees feel they are growing their skills to remain competitive in the labor market. Investing in employees, their happiness and success as professionals, matters greatly.
