Adventures in Real Estate Tech: 2017 in Review

Adventures in Real Estate Tech: 2017 in Review

It's been a big year! I published 24 articles filled with analysis and insight that have been seen by over 18,000 people. We'll take a look at some of the highlights below, but first I'd like to share my thoughts on the year ahead.

Themes for 2018

I'll begin 2018 by releasing a new, expansive report on the emerging models in real estate tech that are gaining traction globally. I'll also be closely watching:

  • The growth of disruptive models like Purplebricks and Opendoor, which both face huge growth opportunities in the U.S. How big will they get?
  • Diversifying property portal revenues into adjacent services isn't easy. I'll be keeping an eye on who is expanding where, and how they're doing it.
  • Facebook's entry into real estate and its competitive pressure on property portals around the world. How will they react?

Going deeper in the space

I had the pleasure to work with a number of amazing companies throughout the year, from major property portals to disruptive startups. Next year I'll be looking to get more hands-on with a select number of companies where I can apply my expertise. Drop me a line if I can help you (here's what I offer).

2017 Highlights

The 2017 Global Real Estate Portal Report

In 2017 I released my 100+ slide presentation looking at the top real estate portals from around the globe.

Opendoor and iBuyers

I looked at how the cadre of iBuyers are growing, a deep dive into Opendoor and OffererPad in Phoenix, and insights around Opendoor's improving operational efficiency.

Disruption in the U.K.

This year I looked at how the biggest real estate incumbent is reacting to digital disruption, the technology beyond online agency eMoov, and how upstart portal OnTheMarket doesn't understand network effects.

Purplebricks' Expansion

I also spent time looking at industry disruptor Purplebricks, analyzing its momentum in Australiakey observations from its FY17 results, and how its U.S. launch is going.

Property Portals

Let's not forget the portals! I pulled together the key takeaways from Zoopla's FY17 results and looked at the implications of Zillow's Instant Offers program.

That's a lot to take in at this time of night. To be read thoroughly early tomorrow morning. That said, I did sign up for your newsletter. I used to work for a tech company and have been around people in IT my entire life so this is fascinating stuff! I look forward to the deep dive!
