Placing world-class Chiefs of Staff for the C-suite

Hiring a Chief of Staff at the seed stage is something people LOVE dunking on on X But I regularly come across Chief of Staff openings at seed startups, so either founders are dumb (unlikely) or they’re realizing what kind of leverage they could get sooner…so they’re getting aggressive with fast-tracking a CoS hire and not waiting until their Series A They’re also getting aggressive with comp🔥like top of market salary bands (up to $200k) and very generous equity (~1%, which is unheard of) Exciting to see the changes happening on the frontlines of recruiting for this role. (PS see below for some CoS humor 😂) #chiefofstaff #recruiting

Much like other structure roles, the preference is to intelligently create a huge mess and then bring in the CoS to deal with the business and the tangled Christmas lights after the fact. It has nothing to do with intelligence, it is all about focus. You can do it once, nobody would argue that point, but are you going to do it 1,000 times while monitoring for efficiencies all while balancing it out with every other moving part in your company? No? Ok, hire a structure person as you are structuring your structure so that it supports you in the coming years.

One of the smartest things a founder can do at the early stage is free himself of the distractions that keep his company from becoming great.

Barkhad Abdi was paid $65k for his performance in Captain Phillips. I postulate that this is one of the best-known memes of our time. This actor had lasting impact, despite being under-valued. Just like the executive assistant to COF advertised above. (that’s really what they need, as they’re obviously over-burdening the COF with functions that can be cadenced or delegated, and that’s not what a COF is for!)

CoS is quite a new term overly used and abused and with endless functions...so no wonder early stage founders can be on the lookout of a CoS...seeing the position as a Swiss red Knife..a right arm and it's a good idea...the terminology itself is pointless...
