Black women receive just 1% of all VC funding. On Monday 3 June US federal courts banned the Fearless Fund providing grants exclusively to black women on the basis that it is “discriminatory”. Here’s why it’s such a terrible decision. #vcfunding #fearlessfund #womeninbusiness #blackwomeninbusiness #fundinggap #womenandmoney

Things people who are smarter than me taught me this week….👩🏼🏫🧠🤘🏼 1. Maureen DeAngles - to always leverage relationships first in every negotiation 🫱🏼🫲🏾 2. Ben Gower - that you don’t need to win every time to still have a smile on your face (in fact it helps you get over it) 🥈😀 3. Debbie Wosskow, OBE - that the Invest in Women Taskforce has been set up to address the fact that <2% of all raised capital in the UK goes to women 💰🤬- WTF! 4. Kathryn Wilson - that when you’re not sure about something you should almost certainly always say “hell yeh” 🙋🏼♀️ What have you learnt this week? #growthmindset #execleadership #entrepreneurship #commercial #growth

The system is not broken — it's working as designed. The recent decision by the 11th Circuit U.S. Court of Appeals to block the Fearless Fund from awarding grants exclusively to Black women is an example of the systemic oppression faced by Black women and the critical need for intervention. In 2023, Black women received less than 1% of the $215 billion available in venture capital funding. Yet, Black-led and Black-benefitting organizations are under attack by conservative activists while simultaneously navigating the reality of the systemic disparities undergirded by white supremacy and apathy. This decision underscores the pervasive challenges within our society and highlights the urgent need to address inequities in venture capital and philanthropy head-on. The Fearless Fund, founded by Black women to support Black women entrepreneurs, has worked to funnel much-needed capital into underrepresented communities. We stand in solidarity with the countless Black women striving to realize their dreams. The fight for justice and equity continues. A quick reminder of how much VC money went to female founders in Europe in 2023: 🤯 79.7% of VC capital went to male founders 🤯 18.5% went to male/female co-founders 🤯 1.8% went to all female teams If you find a male co-founder, you have a 10x better chance of raising If you have an all male founding team, you have a 44x better chance of raising Women of colour raise a fraction of that sum. It may be International Womens Day, but there is still so much more work to do
