UNWANTED ADVICE | When coaching leaders, one of the worst questions you can ask is, "Have you thought about...?" In my coaching workshops, I emphasize that effective coaching isn't about giving advice or offering solutions—it's about empowering individuals to uncover their own potential and navigate their own paths. Easier said than done, right? We humans LOVE TO GIVE ADVICE and often assume it’s wanted. The more I work with leaders, the more I see that what’s truly needed is space to vent, validate, and explore. Yet, well-intended leaders often jump right into advice-giving, cutting off the creative process of finding their own solutions. And advice disguised as a question can signal a lack of faith in their ability to generate ideas. Imagine a space where leaders can reflect, explore, and discover their own answers. This is where magic happens. Stepping back from advice-giving fosters deeper self-awareness, confidence, and sustainable growth. Why avoid giving advice? ✴️ Ownership: When leaders find their own solutions, they take full ownership of their actions, leading to greater accountability and commitment. ✴️ Confidence: Trusting leaders to navigate their challenges reinforces their confidence in their abilities. ✴️ Critical Thinking: Coaching without advice encourages deeper reflection and sharpens problem-solving skills. Instead of suggesting solutions, ask powerful, open-ended questions that spark thought and self-discovery. Questions like, 🎯"What options do you see?" or 🎯"How do you feel about this approach?" can guide leaders toward their own insights. By resisting the urge to give advice, we help leaders develop the skills and mindset needed to excel and lead with clarity and purpose. CAVEAT: Sure, sometimes advice is clearly requested, and that is the permission needed to give advice outright. However, first assuming advice is wanted can limit growth and perspective. 𝑹𝒆𝒇𝒍𝒆𝒄𝒕𝒊𝒗𝒆 𝒊𝒏𝒒𝒖𝒊𝒓𝒆 𝒘𝒐𝒓𝒌𝒔 𝒍𝒊𝒌𝒆 𝒂 𝒎𝒊𝒓𝒓𝒐𝒓, when you recap what the coachee says, use metaphors, you use condensation to summarize the key points you hear in the conversation, you recognize emotional shifts and you also ,,put them on the table’’ so the coachee can also see them and this does not mean that you don’t use questions, for sure you combine questions which can help the coachee understand more the way he thinks. So, in my opinion 😊 𝑳𝒆𝒕’𝒔 𝒇𝒐𝒄𝒖𝒔 𝒎𝒐𝒓𝒆 𝒐𝒏 𝒕𝒉𝒆 𝒑𝒆𝒓𝒔𝒐𝒏, 𝒐𝒏 𝒂𝒄𝒕𝒊𝒗𝒆 𝒍𝒊𝒔𝒕𝒆𝒏𝒊𝒏𝒈, 𝒐𝒏 𝒃𝒆𝒊𝒏𝒈 𝒑𝒓𝒆𝒔𝒆𝒏𝒕, 𝒐𝒏 𝒖𝒔𝒊𝒏𝒈 𝒓𝒆𝒇𝒍𝒆𝒄𝒕𝒊𝒗𝒆 𝒊𝒏𝒒𝒖𝒊𝒓𝒚 and less on staying in our minds focusing on, which question should I ask next? or what exercise should I give him to have that aha moment'' BUUUUT also remember this type of coaching doesn’t work alone! The secret to transforming your business is simple… Coaching. In fact, this week’s ‘Leading from the Middle’ guest thinks if more of us ‘were trained as coaches, the world would be a better place—and we humans would have more engaged and fulfilled lives.’ And I have to say, I totally agree!
