VERY LARGE SCALE INTEGRATION (VLSI) Very large scale integration (VLSI) is the process of creating an integrated circuit (IC) by combining thousands of transistors into a single chip. VLSI began in the 1970s when complex semiconductor and communication technologies were being developed. The microprocessor is a VLSI device. Central to VLSI are transistors, the workhorses of integrated circuits. These tiny switches control the flow of electrical signals, allowing for creation of complex logical operations. As VLSI advances, researchers push the limits of transistor minimise, striving for ever-smaller sizes and higher performance. Quantum computing, neuromorphic computing, and innovative materials are poised to shape the next chapters of VLSI's narrative. The journey into the microscopic world of integrated circuits continues, unlocking new possibilities that will redefine the landscape of electronics.

THE TRANSISTOR OF 2047: EXPERT PREDICTIONS What will the device be like on its 100th anniversary (in 24 years)? Despite the variety, the fundamental operating principle—the field effect that switches transistors on and off—will likely remain the same, suggests Suman Datta, an IEEE Fellow, professor of electrical and computer at Georgia Tech, and director of the multi-university nanotech research center ASCENT. This device will likely have minimum critical dimensions of 1 nanometer or less, enabling device densities of 10 trillion per square centimeter, says Tsu-Jae King Liu, an IEEE Fellow, dean of the college of engineering at the University of California, Berkeley, and a member of Intel’s board of directors. https://lnkd.in/df-_kKtU

The first graphene semiconductor has arrived. The end of Moore's Law could put a hard brake on further increases in computing power based on silicon semiconductors. Since we can't change the laws of quantum physics, this will limit the further growth of computing power and, by extension, compute-hungry A.I. A new generation of graphene-based chips could boost computing speeds from the current gigahertz to the order of terahertz, with increased power efficiency. [Chinese scientists have developed the first fully analog optoelectronic smart computing chip] According to Xinhua News Agency, after long-term joint research, the Tsinghua University research team broke through the physical bottleneck of traditional chips, creatively proposed a new computing framework for optoelectronic fusion, and developed the world's first fully Analog optoelectronic intelligent computing chip (ACCEL for short). According to actual measurements, the computing power of this chip in intelligent visual target recognition tasks can reach more than 3,000 times that of current high-performance commercial chips, opening up a new path for the research and development of ultra-high-performance chips.
