DICE is typically my favorite conference of the year. This year felt a lot more like GDC than previous years. I ended up with 30+ meetings, more or less back-to-back 30-minute meetings for 3 days. A lot less time to "serendipitously" bump into and meet new people. It felt more like "work" than in years past. My highlight was (as always) playing in the Magic tournament. This year was as big as ever—five full tables with a fair amount of people milling about. I got to play the "finals" match with my good friend Justin Sacks over dinner at a tapas restaurant. While we made the wait staff very uncomfortable it was a blast, despite me losing in g3. I was expecting the event to be pretty negative with everything happening in the industry, but it wasn't. Most of my conversations were about what is next and what people are excited about. A few highlights: -Talking community strategy with a 20+year old game that continues to delight fans -Hearing game design theory a CEO who cares deeply about bullet spread and -Brainstorming launch strategy with freshman studio with mega funding -Chatting creator feedback with a studio that cares deeply about how fun their game is to watch -Hearing that trillion-dollar companies, sometimes have the same problems as the rest of us!

The Larian GOTY speech at DICE got me thinking deeper about monetization that relies heavily on player goodwill. I've always been a believer that making player-focused decisions will result in more money in the long run, but always struggled with deep into that rabbit hole you can go, aka where is the proper balance between making everything free vs being Overwatch 2 on launch. To that end, we've been mulling around a pretty unique take on how we want to monetize Sparkball that I honestly can't tell if its genius or dumb. I've put together a short doc that summarizes how we're looking at this and I'd love some fresh eyeballs on it. Not looking for anything more than a 15-minute sanity check/fun discussion for now, but will eventually need help rolling this out and would love to start building that potential relationship now. The premise is that while our societies strive to be based on the rule of law, the internet is basically in the Middle Ages in terms of user rights. We own almost nothing, and we are happy. While overspends might seem like "just" an accounting problem, the impact of errors on both agencies and their clients can be far-reaching💣. Having talked to clients and working on the agency side ourselves we know this firsthand. 🚫 Risk to Agency-Client Relationships 🚫 Campaign overspends threaten the trust that media agencies have worked hard to build with their clients. When a campaign budget spirals out of control, clients can feel misled, frustrated, and disappointed. The result? Damaged relationships take significant effort to rebuild if they can be rebuilt at all. The consequences extend beyond a single campaign or project; it affects future collaborations, referrals, and even pitches😓. ⏳ Wasted Time and Effort ⏳ Beyond the financial burden, campaign overspends demand additional internal work to address the issue and also incremental work to prevent errors from happening in the future. This frequently manifests as additional processes, such as 6-eye checks or employees having to meticulously document campaign checks (often not changing the outcome of wasted media budget 😕) are put in place. Team members must divert their attention from strategic initiatives to firefighting, attempting to correct the situation and comfort clients. This diversion can slow down progress on other projects, leading to missed opportunities and reduced efficiency. In essence, overspends hinder the agency's potential for growth and innovation. 🚀
