Kietley Unlocking the Avatamsaka Sutra (1) Even without waiting for Leibniz's Monadology, it is easy to find expressions of God's infinity and omnipresence (the unity of parts and whole) in various forms within religion. For example, the Nuer people, cattle herders living in the savannas and swamps of southern Sudan and Egypt, worship a deity called "Kwos." This is a spirit that exists in the heavens, the earth, and even in animals, sometimes referred to as "Kwos me galgal." "Galgal" is an adjective that combines "omnipresent" and "infinite," and for the Nuer people, God is indeed infinite and omnipresent. What Augustine describes about God in "Confessions" can indeed be seen as a precursor to Spinoza's infinite set theory. I did not know that God did not have limbs with length or width, and did not have volume. Anything with volume, even if it is infinite, has a part of its infinite extent smaller than the infinite extent of the whole. However, God exists everywhere, as a whole. It is also necessary to note the basic structure throughout the entire sixty volumes of the Avatamsaka Sutra, which is the "infinity" and "unity of parts and whole." For example, consider the following analogy regarding the reality of enlightenment, represented by the "Tathagata": The Tathagata is infinite and manifests its form everywhere. However, it does not mean that there are an infinite number of Tathagatas. Consider the image of the full moon reflected in countless puddles. The shadows are numerous, but the actual body is not. The reality of enlightenment, such as the Tathagata or Buddha, is said to be "one and many, many and one." And within each hair of the Tathagata, there are infinite Buddhas, within each of which an infinite world expands. At first, I grappled with this statement because I often talk about the past being outside of our control, therefore, what is Alan saying about the present changing the past 🤔? But when you think about it, he’s simply saying that we can change our past by reframing it. That by changing the way we view a past event, we get to change it. Nice one Allan. Kietley “The World of Mana” (2) The Aranda draw spirals and concentric circles on flat, egg-shaped stones or wood pieces, which they store in caves as objects of worship, calling them "churinga." A type of instrument used in sacred ceremonies is also called churinga. "Chu" in old language means "hidden" or "secret," and "runga" means "one's own." Thus, the original meaning of churinga is "one's own secret thing." The Omaha Indians call various natural phenomena like the sun, moon, thunder, and wind, as well as magical and ritual objects, "Wakanda." Wakanda means "power," "sacred," "ancient," "great," "alive," and "immortal." It has been translated as "spirit" or "great spirit," but "the mysterious" is considered the closest meaning. "Kwoth" of the Shilluk means "great," "bottomless," and "incomprehensible." When the first large steamer passed through the Shilluk region of the Nile, they marveled, "No human could make such a ship; it must be Kwoth's." In greetings, they say, "Kwoth brought you here" (I-Kal-Kwoth). British missionary Codrington, who first studied mana, described Melanesian religion as based on the conviction of a supernatural force existing in an invisible realm. Cultural anthropologists collectively refer to such divine concepts as "sacred power." However, whether these societies recognized their objects as "power" is debatable. Paul Radin pointed out that these concepts mean "sacred," "wonderful," "important," "remarkable," "strong," and that "the primary concern is with the reality of existence." Many of these vignettes about Hafız have the charming symmetry and precision of symbolic teaching stories. The recurring number forty, for example, might not be meant liter- ally. In spiritual literature, "forty" is often used to indicate a term of learning or change, such as the "forty days and forty nights" of Noah's Flood. Forty is also called "the number of perseverance," marking a period of growth through testing, trial and purification. After the exodus from Egypt, the Israelites endured "forty years of wandering" in the wilderness before they were ready to enter the Promised Land. Jesus, fol- lowing the ancient practice of the prophets, went into the desert for a great seclusion of forty days, which he described as period a of purification and preparation for the next stage of his work. The Buddha attained final enlightenment after forty days of continuous meditation. One can find many examples, East and West. These tales of Hafiz share other common symbols. There is the "mystic circle," which is an image of completion or perfection. And there is the glass of wine Attar gives Hafiz. A glass or cup is a vessel, which can often represent the human heart, or even the human being as a vessel of love. "Wine" stands for love in many spiritual traditions.
