Horizontal connections not hierarchy: How The Guardian and The Kyiv Independent collaborate based on the demands of teams This was the title of a case study Kelly Walls and I presented at WAN-IFRA, the World Association of News Publishers, in Copenhagen a few weeks ago (Joanna Krawczyk thank you for the invitation!) Sharing here a few notes on why this partnership worked: - We focused on quick wins and freedom to explore instead of designing a big program and processes. For example, just one tip from Guardian training on reader revenue back in 2022 resulted in over 150% increase in our acquisitions that week. - Our collaboration evolved based on the demands of our teams. We started from reader revenue but expanded to include product, marketing, and editorial. As a result, we got strong horizontal connection where a lot of people in KI are in touch with people in similar roles at the Guardian. - Facilitation and leadership by The Guardian Foundation. We have 60 people at the moment, and Guardian has 1000+. Guardian Foundation took the role of a facilitator between the two organizations, ensuring that we can exchange knowledge both ways efficiently. 📷 from visiting Guardian office in London in 2023
Amazing examples Zakhar! Are you collaborating with any other media company in a similar fashion?
Amazing to be part of something so organic with the freedom for it to evolve. Excited to see what's next and empowered by not knowing.
Excellent perspective. How do you approach hierarchy and authority within your organizations?
This seems Amazingg, missed catching up with you in Copenhagen during the event Zakhar Protsiuk. I hope you are doing great.
I'm always amazed at how you guys are working!
Terrific experiment, glad it worked.
Keep growing!
So cool to read!
Awesome!
It was truly an empowering story
