Seeing my name on the honor roll resulted from late nights making the 11:59 PM deadline with 30 seconds left, tackling tricky problems, and sacrificing time for study sessions. Making the honor roll wasn't just about grades; it was about discipline, pushing beyond limits, and discovering hidden resilience. The feeling of validation ignited confidence that I could tackle anything I set my mind. Making the honor roll was a tapestry woven with threads of encouragement, support, and friendly competition. It is time again to solicit nominations for the AuE Distinguished Alumni Award. You can see details and submission requirements below. All submission content must be sent to automotive@clemson.edu by 11:59pm on Thursday, February 15th, in order to be considered! Award Details -Recognizes distinguished alumni from AuE for their accomplishments in the auto industry or academia. -Winners have travel and accommodations covered by the department to our annual Fellowship Ceremony. -Award recipient will be expected to give short remarks at the Fellowship Ceremony. -Materials must be submitted together and are due February 15th to automotive@clemson.edu. Requirements -2 letters of recommendation (1 from current or past supervisor, and 1 from colleague or former AuE Faculty.) -Updated CV/resume. -Personal statement indicating why the individual is deserving of this award, no more than 1 page in length. -All submitted materials together should not exceed 6 pages in length. -Open to all alumni, regardless of current position. No minimum required time post-graduation to be eligible. -Self-nominations or external nominations are accepted. Law is not just a career. I would recommend it to anyone. It is a way forward into whatever you value and are passionate about. It can take you to places you never dreamed of, put you in rooms you were never sure even existed, introduce you to people who open your eyes and your mind and take you ever forward. ✨ Alumni Spotlight ✨ Meet Jessica Skerlec (She/her) Where is your hometown and where are you located now? Raised in Kelowna and still currently living in Kelowna. What did you take at OC? What campus did you attend? I took my Bachelor’s of Business Administration at Okanagan College, specializing in Human Resources Management at the Kelowna Campus. What is your current position? Negotiator for the National Collective Bargaining Institute. Why did you choose your program at OC? How does it relate to what you’re doing now? I chose to complete my BBA at OC because of it’s outstanding reputation for producing qualified graduates and offering variety of specialized course offerings students are unable to find at other institutes and universities. What was one of your most meaningful memories during your time at OC? My most meaningful memory at OC was winning Gold at the 2023 Queen’s University Intercollegiate Business Case Competition in the Human Resources Stream. What do you think has been the biggest turning point for your career success? My biggest turning point was joining the OBSA executive team in my second year of studies, eventually becoming president of the association. Pursuing this allowed me to become more involved in the school outside of the classroom and expanding my network of connections, while creating opportunities to host meaningful events for the student body and further establish myself in the local business community. Are there any awards, achievements or activities that you would like to highlight? I.C.B.C. 2023 Human Resources Gold Medalist, 2023 HRC West Case Competition Competitor, President of the OBSA, Dean’s List Graduate. What advice would you pass on to current/future students? I strongly encourage all students to become involved at the College beyond their classrooms, as it creates valuable connections and opportunities with their peers, professors and faculty, and the local community. Whether it is competing in case competitions, joining associations or clubs, or simply attending networking and social events on and off campus, students become exposed to information and learnings that expand beyond their course material, and are able to truly create a meaningful brand for themselves. When you’re not working, what are you doing? When I’m not working, I’m always staying active playing soccer or spending time with my family and friends!

Numerous people have asked me, "Why didn't you participate in any of Clayton State's commencement ceremonies this past weekend since you are a 2023 graduate?" First, I want to congratulate all my peers who graduated this semester!! Despite my absence, my spirits and prayers were with you all. But for me, I know that my work isn't done. I've caught my second wind and am focused on what's in store for me next year. So, instead of celebrating, I'm still studying and preparing like I have four more years left. And I will do that every four years for the rest of my life. 😎 I've studied a lot of great athletes, entertainers, politicians, and academics, and they all have one thing in common; They are obsessed with learning from their losses and mistakes and enjoy utilizing their earned wisdom on new challenges while inspiring others. And how well they do that under pressure defines their character and leadership style to the masses. For me, receiving a college degree is just the result of being someone who wanted to spend 1,460 days working on their writing, communication, and time-management skills to prepare themselves for a new set of challenges that requires the addition of even more skills. I've shown people that I can spend 1,460 days achieving a goal against all odds while inspiring and communicating to others that they can do the same. The most beneficial thing I got from being a college student at Clayton State University was the opportunity to practice and receive valuable feedback on my efforts from excellent researchers and practitioners in their respective fields. When I started college, I didn't have an endgame. I had a game plan. That's the difference between me and most people, in and out of college. Besides, I'll be back in Spring 2024. #Dreamsmadereal #NoLimits
