Spheroids are increasingly important - here's why! It's been over 50 years since the term spheroid was first used to describe multiple cells arranged into near-perfect multicellular spheres. Since then, spheroids have become increasingly crucial for understanding cancer behavior, improving regenerative medicine, and creating better methods for drug screening. Compared to traditional cell culture, using 3D cell culture to produce spheroids in a native tissue-like environment has been shown to promote cell interaction and realistic behavior. Overall, this leads to improved fidelity and resemblance to in vivo tissues. With technologies like 3D bioprinting and biodispensing, it's becoming more accessible and easier to conduct repeatable spheroid studies, which is crucial for the widespread adoption of this improved form of cell culture.
