Today is World Day Against Child Labour! 👩👧👦 Since 2000, the world has been steadily reducing child labour. But over the past few years, conflicts, crises and the COVID-19 pandemic have plunged more families into poverty – and forced millions more children into child labour. According to the United Nations (UN), to date, 160 million children are still engaged in child labour. That is almost one in ten children worldwide. This needs to change. Yesterday, professionals, policymakers, and experts discussed and debated ideas around Building an Inclusive Labour Market, at Ulster University. We addressed re-skilling, upskilling, and challenges for businesses and economically inactive groups. An overarching solution is that the economy can grow through business engagement with groups who enter our society and inactive groups within our society. However, the skills shortage is a challenge for businesses who seek opportunities to engage with these groups. Business in the Community Northern Ireland actively brokers the links between businesses, the support organisations who upskill, and motivated individuals within these groups who want to change their present reality. We have a community of people who would love a chance of employment, but because of their disability they are not even given a chance #samechance But while the pupils have learned so much, their teachers fear a lack of pathways post-19 will leave them with few opportunities. Ireland 🇮🇪 I call on all employers to look beyond the disability and look at the ability, with very little accommodations for some and more for others, most people can work and contribute to the success of your business In Ireland, people with disabilities face significant challenges in the labour market, leading to high rates of unemployment and underemployment. As of recent data, the employment rate for people with disabilities in Ireland is one of the lowest in the European Union.
