#SixLessons
It’s been six wonderful years since I rejoined #AbsaBank from #HSBC in #HongKong. I had spent 6 years there and I have now spent 6 great years at Absa. In a way the 6 years have gone so fast, because it’s been a beautiful experience.
To celebrate the six years, here are the six key lessons I have learned or reinforced during that time.
1. Continuous learning is the only way to keep growing. We must continuously learn, unlearn and relearn to keep being relevant. Learning, unlearning, and relearning must be intentional. Learn everyday.
2. One must be driven by results. Results matter. There is not much to say here because this is why organizations exist, to keep delivering results. Without results, everything else just sounds like noise. It’s not personal, it is what it is.
3. Be authentic. What more can one say? Authenticity draws people to you, makes people trust you, and allows you to build genuine, long-lasting, and meaningful relationships.
4. Rest is important. Business is relentless. There are new challenges everyday. Always find time to “sit down, rest, and reflect”. We live in a very busy world, with an avalanche of information. Always find time to rest, disconnect, and kick your shoes away.
5. Build relationships centered around genuine respect, open mindedness, and curiosity. Recognize that you work with people, human beings with real lives. Be interested in their humanity.
6. Do more than is expected of you in your job. Be a thoughtful Corporate Citizen. Help the organization. Help others. Help solve meaningful problems that move the organization forward.
Thank you to my colleagues, bosses and teams, past and present, for the great and wonderful time.
Everyday I am more passionate about what we do in our beautiful continent of Africa. I am excited about us solving problems, moving our continent forward and helping to build our economies.
