Recently, I watched a YouTube video on "What is faster? PC vs Mainframe" by Dave's Garage. He explained about the differences and key abilities of IBM Mainframe though he took z14 as a reference, which is two generations back and is still supported on-premise with newer models. What truly caught my attention was the comparison that unfolded as the video reached its conclusion. Dave compared the AMD 3990X Threadripper, a beast of a PC with its 4.35GHz speed, against the IBM z14 Mainframe boasting a staggering 170 cores (small correction: not 190), 40TB memory with its 5.2GHz speed, and capabilities that stretch far beyond the confines of conventional PC setups. Dave openly acknowledges that the mainframe realm encompasses features that are years ahead of what traditional PCs can dream to achieve. It's a humbling moment that reminds us of the immense power housed within mainframes, reshaping the landscape of high-performance computing. But why, you ask, do companies continue to place their trust in mainframes in this era of rapid technological evolution? The answer is simple yet profound: Mainframes are the unsung heroes powering critical business operations in industries that demand unwavering reliability, high security, and exceptional performance. I find it fascinating that IBM was being investigated for monopolistic practices in the 20th century, which changed the company's behavior, and in this century they've made the remaining System/360-compatible mainframe vendors (Fujitsu's the only one I can think of right now) irrelevant by transitioning to a 64-bit architecture and continually improving their software stack, which only runs on their systems. They also have a mountain of patents to sue potential competitors (or emulator vendors) with.

MAINFRAME HISTORY In the 1960s the computer industry was known as IBM and the Seven Dwarfs because of IBM's complete dominance. It was true that Burroughs, Univac, NCR, Control Data, Honeywell, RCA and GE were definitely not tiny, but compared to IBM's market share; they were definitely dwarfs. After RCA and GE jettisoned their computer divisions in the early 1970s, IBM's much smaller competitors simply became known as the BUNCH, after the first letters of each surviving dwarf. #mainframe
