Friday FriYAY... Last night I was hanging out with some old (in both uses of the word) friends. We don't agree on everything and we still get together once a month for beverages and sitting under the stars (when it isn't raining) and discussing life, challenges, hopes, dreams and failures. It is in these times I always feel my strongest hope for humanity. It seems it's only when I turn on the TV or scroll through social media that my hope wanes. It begs the question, where do I want to spend my time? Jerome Powell told Congress yesterday he still expects to cut interest rates this year. I'm still betting it won't happen until the fall (the season, not the end of the empire). Lots of little quips today. People better be prepared for a sarcasm explosion around me. Literalists have a hard time around me I have found. Not only are airlines raising baggage fees, they are now cracking down on crossbody bags and fanny packs. Yes, fanny packs! What is the world coming to? Many of you saw a post from Twisted X Global Brands that I am a finalist for D CEO Finance Executive of the Year. I am generally non-plussed about being in the spotlight. That said, it is nice to be honored as a finalist for a) the exposure it garners for the brand, b) the opportunity to brag on my team and c) the affirmation that hard work and caring about people makes a difference. Some of you know I wanted to study psychology instead of accounting. I won't go into the story here but suffice it to say, the desire to study psychology has never left me. In fact, it has driven me to work in companies where I could be more operational and work with people, putting the puzzle together of how to create strong teams. I appreciate all of my employers for giving me great opportunities to live my passion while getting paid for something I didn't love to do but worked hard at being good at. I am ever thankful for the opportunities and the many, many teammates I have been able to work with and, hopefully, make an impact on in their lives. The journey from FD to MD… Is it a common progression? 🤔 On Tuesday, I had yet another brilliant NOVA Community event! Gill S. talked us through how she transitioned from FD to MD and how she supports people and drives growth at The Perfume Shop. My key takeaways are - 🤓 Take control of your own development! Don’t wait for someone to tap you on the shoulder to see if you’d like to do more. 👩🏻💻 Develop yourself in lots of different areas. Don’t stay in that “finance” lane. 🫵🏼 Ask for what you want. Don’t presume people know you’d like the promotion or different role. 👯♀️ Having a brilliant community around you is key! You’ll benefit so much from this support. 🗣️ Get out and network lots. You’ll learn loads from others. 💛 Make sure you’re always developing others. You’ll learn lots from this too. 📈 Measure the outputs from staff, not the inputs. This will empower them. It’ll also enable talented individuals to work around other commitments and work when and how it’s best for them. I think finance leaders who are able to look at the bigger picture of businesses are perfectly aligned to step into the MD role. Big thanks to #Evanta for hosting a wonderful #CIO / #CISO event last week. Gatherings like these are so important, not only in fostering insightful discussions and knowledge sharing, but also in cultivating relationships and shaping our thinking through diverse perspectives. Reflecting on our governing body dinner, I am reminded of the power of high performing teams and the elements that are pivotal to their success. As part of our dinner, we delved into a chocolate bark making competition, judged on taste, creativity, and unique team name. The individuals on our team happened to be a diverse group of leaders spanning gender, nationality, CIO vs CISO, and vendor vs practitioner. We all showed up with an open mindset, allowing each member to shine and freely contribute their unique talents. There was no debating, just supporting each other, and we trusted one other as our creation unfolded with a unique recipe infusing wine into our chocolate, a novel ingredient we introduced. Our design morphing into a butterfly, and we creatively spun a story around the symbolism of the butterfly along with the rare vintage of wine used to infuse our chocolate. The result? We won! Our creative and delicious masterpiece exemplified the strength of #diversity, #collaboration, an open mindset, and the richness of our collective talents. As leaders, it is our responsibility to foster a #culture where the uniqueness of every individual is not just celebrated but becomes a driving force for excellence.
