𝐻𝑢𝑛𝑔𝑒𝑟 𝑖𝑠𝑛’𝑡 𝑎 𝑠𝑐𝑎𝑟𝑐𝑖𝑡𝑦 𝑝𝑟𝑜𝑏𝑙𝑒𝑚; 𝑖𝑡’𝑠 𝑎 𝑙𝑜𝑔𝑖𝑠𝑡𝑖𝑐𝑠 𝑝𝑟𝑜𝑏𝑙𝑒𝑚. Many people ask, “How did we scale to solve this?” When I started my company, fewer than 10 people were in a garage in the Mission, feeding a million people with high-quality excess food. Today, the growth is mind-blowing. 🤯 Initially, we hired our drivers to deliver the food — it was costly, complex, and unsustainable for a lean startup. Then I thought, why build an Uber or DoorDash while building Copia? Why not leverage existing global logistics infrastructure? That’s precisely what we did. We created an API integration with DoorDash, allowing food providers to request surplus food pickups anywhere in the country. Licensed, insured drivers from DoorDash, Uber, and others now deliver high-quality food to those who need it most when they need it most. This strategy has enabled us to feed people across 300+ cities in North America. Partnerships with amazing companies like DoorDash have been game-changing for us. A new mobile market is tackling food deserts in #NorthCarolina, where 1.4 million people struggle to find healthy food. Ripe for Revival, a nonprofit based in Rocky Mount, has partnered with Coastal Credit Union to increase the availability of fresh produce in underserved areas. Jonathan Tyndall, operations manager for Ripe for Revival, said the group has a dual mission of supporting local farms and communities, and that by rescuing surplus produce that doesn't make it to grocery stores, Ripe for Revival creates a pay-as-you-go market to reach communities that need it most. "It's just a way for fresh food to go into areas that otherwise don't have the affordability to get it, or they don't have the access to it. Because there's some areas we go to that they don't have grocery stores, and so a round trip would have to drive an hour," he explained. To accomplish its mission, Ripe for Revival has converted five city transit buses and two 24-foot cargo trailers into mobile grocery stores. And with the support of Coastal Credit Union's sponsorship of more than $100 in grants, it's been able to add another trailer to its fleet. These mobile units make about 18 stops and serve about ten counties per week, offering fresh produce and other items such as eggs and meat at prices about 30% lower than regular grocery stores. Tyndall said that impact will now be able to reach new areas and continue to grow with the additional Coastal Credit Union branded trailer. "Part of their dollars allowed us to expand in the new counties. So they're going to help us to expand in Franklin, Granville, Vance, Warren County, and also kind of extend our reach into Wake County, " he added. Tyndall explained the group envisions expanding Ripe for Revival's operations to other counties, with a target of serving 23 and hosting 45 events per week by the end of the year. He said these efforts not only support healthier communities, but also help reduce food waste and challenge the stereotypes surrounding food insecurity. "What do a lot of college students live off of? As a joke, people talk about ramen noodles. So that's actually a form of food insecurity," he explained. "There are certain communities that we go into where they don't have anything except for a Family Dollar [store]. And so, there's nothing fresh for them to go in to purchase." He said that these mobile markets are not limited to those in need. They are designed to serve everyone, regardless of their circumstances. Grant Alert! The HFFI Partnerships Program is for regional, state, or local public-private partnerships that are organized to improve access to fresh, healthy foods and provide financial and technical assistance to eligible projects. Partnerships include meaningful collaboration between two or more organizations. Partnerships must be public-private partnerships; one entity must be a public entity such as a local, state or a tribal authority, government, or agency; the others may be nonprofits, for-profit businesses, foundations, food policy councils, food systems and food access organizations, among others. The HFFI Partnerships Program is not for food retailers or food enterprises seeking funding for a capital project. GRANT AWARDS In 2023, up to $30,000,000 is available for HFFI Partnerships Program grants. Grant awards for capacity building activities will range from $200,000-$1,000,000 Grant awards for credit enhancement activities will range from $500,000-$3,000,000 Each grantee will be eligible for up to $3,000,000 in total award funding. Future funding rounds may be available. WHAT WE WILL FUND The HFFI Partnerships Program will fund eligible Partnerships that are working to improve access to fresh, healthy food in underserved communities through providing technical and financial assistance to food retailers and food enterprises. Grant funding may be used to establish, expand, or deepen local, statewide, regional, and other Food Financing Programs (FFP) that serve food retailer and food enterprise projects in underserved areas. Food retail projects include grocery stores and other markets that sell staple and perishable foods and accept SNAP from consumers. Eligible food enterprises include food retail supply chain businesses that serve or work with food retailers. These FFPs should provide, or plan to provide, financial assistance such as grants, loans, or equity investments to food retail or food enterprise projects. FFPs may also provide technical assistance to those projects or to communities trying to improve food retail access. Grant funding may be used to increase the capacity of current partnerships to go deeper in their current communities or expand to new communities. It may also be used to assist the development or launch of a new Partnership and FFP in an underserved area where resources have not previously existed. Grant funding may be used to increase the ability of existing partnerships to provide financial assistance to food retail or food enterprises in their current communities or expand to new communities.
